Un peu Asa, un peu Ayo, totalement pop : Melissa Laveaux !
Autoditacte, guitariste depuis l'âge de 13 ans, jazz haïtien à la maison, Melissa Laveaux, est née à Montréal en 1985 de parents haïtiens fraîchement immigrés. Elle grandit à Ottawa, Ontario, dans un univers majoritairement anglophone, et doit tenter de s’intégrer à ce nouvel environnement, sans rien abandonner pour autant de sa culture d’origine, créole et francophone. Elle brasse toutes sortes d'influences : le folk indépendant canadien (Joni Mitchell, Feist), le trip hop britannique (Martina Topley-Bird), la musique brésilienne alternative (Adriana Calcanhotto, Os Mutantes), les stars du hip hop et de la nu-soul (Erikah Badu, Common, The Roots, The Fugees…), les grandes voix de la tradition afro-américaine (Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin) et les étoiles lointaines de la World Music (Rokia Traoré, Lhasa…). Exceptées deux reprises magistralement réinventées (« Needle in the hay » d’Elliott Smith et « I Wanna be Evil » d’Eartha Kitt), elle pose un univers personnel, avec des arrangements minimalistes privilégient l’énergie et l’impact poétique de ses mots. Sa voix surtout se déploie, majestueuse et fragile, profonde, sensuelle et délicieusement juvénile, creusée de remous intérieurs sous la séduction immédiate, comme travaillée par ce trilinguisme qui marque sa vie, la fluidité rythmique de la langue anglaise, la syncope nonchalante du Créole, la sophistication harmonique du Français. Originale, et impressionnante, avec ce mélange de maturité et de fraîcheur très pop !

Autoditacte, guitarist since the age of 13 Haitian jazz at home, Melissa Laveaux, was born in Montreal in 1985 to Haitian parents freshly immigrants. She grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, in a predominantly English, and must try to integrate into this new environment, with nothing to abandon all its culture of origin, Creole and French. It brews all kinds of influences: the independent Canadian folk (Joni Mitchell, Feist), the British trip-hop (Martina Topley-Bird), Brazilian music alternative (Adriana Calcanhotto, Os Mutantes), the hip hop stars and the nu-soul (erikah Badu, Common, The Roots, The Fugees ...), the great voices of Afro-American tradition (Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin) and the distant stars of the World Music (Rokia Traoré, Lhasa ... ). Except twice brilliantly reinvented ( "Needle in the hay" of Elliott Smith and "I Want to Be Evil" by Eartha Kitt), it is a personal universe, with minimalist arrangements emphasize the energy and impact of its poetic words. His voice above all unfolds, majestic and fragile, deep, sensual and deliciously juvenile dug backwater in the interior immediately attractiveness, as this worked trilingualism which marks his life, the rhythmic fluidity of the English language, syncope nonchalante Creole, the harmonic sophistication of the French. Original and impressive, with this mixture of maturity and freshness very pop!
