"The 2005 Coteaux du Languedoc Solen – a 60-40 blend of Carignan and Grenache – is showing both an acrid trace of reduction on the nose and a relatively rustic tannic streak. That’s not to say there isn’t a lot to like here, from the ripe, lightly stewed black fruits and smoky hint of machine oil in the nose; through ripe, vanilla- and dark chocolate-tinged berries on the palate; to an impressively persistent if slightly rough finish. Will this improve with cellaring. I would be inclined to drink it over the coming year, simply choosing cuisine where its tannins will not prove a handicap."
