First things first, au Limo on a sauté de joie quand on a su que Junktion était d’accord pour nous accorder une interview et nous faire un mix exclusif! Junktion c’est un peu le mec qui est en train de monter en flèche au travers de ses différentes releases sur de gros labels comme Times Are Ruff, Slow Town, ou encore Outplay, son propre label qu’il gère avec Danïel Leseman et qui forme aussi avec lui le duo Fouk.

Alors pour se mettre en condition, mettez play sur le mix qu’il a concocté spécialement à cette occasion et partez à la découverte de ce talentueux artiste hyper actif!

Junktion, who are you? // Qui es tu Junktion ?

Hi I’m Hans Peeman from Nijmegen, The Netherlands. I’m a graphic designer and music producer. I make music under the alias Junktion and also as Fouk together with Daniël Leseman. With Daniël I also run Outplay, our own label which now is about to release our second vinyl EP!

Je m’appelle Hans Peeman et j’habite Nijmegen aux Pays-Bas. Je suis graphiste et producteur musical. Je produis sous le nom de Junktion en solo et Fouk en duo avec Danïel Leseman. C’est aussi avec Danïel que je gère Outplay, notre label sur lequel nous allons bientôt sortir notre deuxième EP sur vinyle!

We are amazed by your groovy House music! Are you a musician by formation or self-taught? // Nous sommes épatés par ta House bien groovy! Es-tu un musicien de formation ou autodidacte?

Thank you very much! I am self taught, I don’t have any formal musical training. Although sometimes I wish I did have, I also feel these “limits” push me to perform better and better. I started out at the age of 15/16 making tracks on my computer inspired by the artists I liked back then. Which was a bit different from what I make now, haha! I’ve been making (deeper) house music for a couple of years now. I’m really inspired by the jazz, funk and soul from the 60s, 70s and early 80s.

Merci beaucoup! Je suis autodidacte et je n’ai aucune formation musicale formelle. Bien que de temps en temps j’aurai aimé en avoir une, je ressens aussi que cette « limite » me pousse constamment à donner le meilleur de moi même. J’ai débuté vers 15-16 ans à produire des morceaux inspirés des artistes que j’aimais à l’époque sur mon ordinateur. C’était un brin différent de ce que je fais actuellement, ahah! Mais ça fait maintenant quelques années que je fais de la (deep) house. Je puise mon inspiration dans le jazz, la funk et la soul des années 60 à 80.

What is your setup, mostly hardware, software or both? And why? // Quel est ton setup, principalement des machines, des logiciels ou les deux? Pourquoi?

I work on my iMac together with Logic and a few VST’s, samplers etc. I sample a lot to give the track that warm atmosphere I love.

My workflow is mostly focused on working in the box at the moment, but hardware wise I have a Moog Sub Phatty, MicroKorg, Nord Rack 2, VirusTI (which I don’t use that often anymore). So a bit of both actually. I just bought the Sub Phatty and I really plan on diving in there and finding al the best nooks and crannies in that machine

Je travaille sur mon iMac avec Logic et quelques VST, sampleurs etc. Je sample beaucoup afin de donner au morceau cette atmosphère chaleureuse que j’adore.

J’utilise principalement mon ordinateur pour le moment, mais en termes de machines j’ai un Moog Sub Phatty, un MicroKorg, un Nord Rack 2 et un VirusTI (que je n’utilise plus trop). Donc un peu des deux en fait. Je viens d’acheter le Sub Phatty et j’ai vraiment envie de me plonger dedans afin d’exploiter tout le potentiel de cette machine

How have you met Daniël Leseman? Beside Fouk, have you two been producing together since a long time? // Comment as tu rencontré Danïel Leseman? Mis à part Fouk, est-ce que vous produisez ensemble depuis longtemps?

I’ve known Danïel since the beginning of high school. We’ve been friends for about 16 years now. We started out buying records and spinning them in our attics at home. Around the same time we really wanted to make our own stuff. We’ve been producing together for 15 years, I think. Back then we were making (progressive) trance, got a few records signed and a few well known DJ’s played our stuff.

During that time we both had our studies to focus on as well. We were together in the studio intermittently, but nothing really substantial came out of it.

Until a few years ago, when we were both making a lot more music individually it all started going again. Which eventually led to us starting our Fouk project.

Je connais Danïel depuis le début du lycée. Cela fait plus de 16 ans que nous sommes amis. On a commencé à acheter et jouer des disques ensembles dans nos greniers. Approximativement au même moment nous avons voulu créer notre propre projet. Nous produisons ensemble depuis 15 ans, je crois. A l’époque on faisait de la (progressive) trance, on a eu quelques disques de signés et quelques DJs connus qui les ont joués.

Mais durant cette époque nous nous consacrions aussi à nos études. On était en studio de manière sporadique et rien de vraiment concret en est sorti.

Il y a quelques années on s’est mis à faire plus de musique chacun de notre coté et c’est reparti. C’est ainsi que l’on a commencé notre projet Fouk.

Why have you created Outplay? And what are your plans with it? // Pourquoi avez-vous créé Outplay? Quels sont vos projets pour le label?

We had been toying with the idea of our own label for a long time, but never made a conscious effort to actually make it happen. Until we came in contact with Kristoffer (who is no longer with the label), who after a while told us he was thinking of starting a (deep) house label. That started it all!

We’re planning on releasing a lot more of course, we have an EP coming up by Daniël called “On the Fritz EP” which should be out by the time this interview is online. Next year an EP by another artist we’re really excited about and after that we’re thinking of doing another V.A. There’s is not much we can tell about it at the moment hehe!

On a eu pendant longtemps l’idée de monter notre label, mais on ne s’était jamais donné les moyens de le faire. Jusqu’au jour où l’on a rencontré Kristoffer (qui ne fait plus parti du label désormais), qui nous as dit qu’il était en train de penser à créer un label de (deep) house. C’est comme ça que tout a commencé!

On a prévu de sortir encore beaucoup de chose évidemment, il y a un EP de Danïel intitulé « On The Fritz » (voir ci-dessous) qui devrait être sorti au moment ou cette interview sera en ligne. L’année prochaine il va y avoir un EP d’un artiste qui nous passionne et on réfléchit à faire une autre compilation. On ne peut pas trop en dire plus pour le moment héhé!

In your beginning, you have done some digital releases, but now you focus on vinyl only, is there any particular reasons? // Au début vous avez fait des sorties digitales mais maintenant vous faites uniquement du vinyle, y a t’il une raison particulière?

We found the amount of satisfaction releasing digitally brought us really lacking. There is A LOT of music coming out labeled deep house and we felt our music got buried in the digital stores with that kind of stuff. We really noticed the difference after the first vinyl release came out, the response has been great!

That won’t mean that we’ll never do anything digitally any more, but for the moment we’re planning on keeping it this way.

On a trouvé que sortir du son en digital ne nous apportait pas la satisfaction que l’on attendait. Il y a BEAUCOUP de musique qui sort sous l’étiquette deep house et on a eu l’impression que notre son finissait enterré au milieu de tout ça sur les web stores. On a remarqué une vrai différence après notre premier vinyle et les retours ont été vraiment encourageants!

Cela ne veut pas dire que l’on ne fera plus rien en digital mais pour le moment on s’en tient au vinyl-only.

How have you been brought to work with Slow Town and Times Are Ruff? // Comment as tu été amené à travailler avec les labels Slow Town et Times Are Ruff?

Well, a while after I released my Fever EP on Outplay, Slow Town contacted me that they love my music and wanted to work with me. I really liked what they were doing so I was happy to get the chance to work with them!

Same for Times Are Ruff actually. They make some awesome stuff, so the choice was easy!

En fait après avoir sorti mon EP « Fever » sur Outplay, Slow Town m’a contacté pour me dire qu’ils adoraient ma musique et qu’ils voulaient travailler avec moi. Comme j’aimais beaucoup ce qu’ils faisaient, j’ai tout de suite été conquis par l’idée d’avoir la chance de bosser avec eux !

Ce fut la même chose avec Times Are Ruff. Ils font des méchants sons donc le choix fut facile et évident !

Can you tell us your top 3 dancefloor breaking tracks? // Peux tu nous donner tes 3 meilleurs tracks pour retourner un dancefloor?

Not sure they’re necessarily dance floor breaking tracks, but this is some of the stuff I love:

Harvey Sutherland – Oscillate (Voyage Recordings) From Harvey Sutherlands – Brothers EP, Voyage’s second release, which is absolutely stellar! Haven’t been this excited about an EP since their first release!

Brame & Hamo – Clockwerk (Splendor & Squalour) Splendor & Squalour is the new label of Brame & Hamo and their first release is awesome! Including a Session Victim Remix and two tracks from Brame and Hamo individually.

Danïel Leseman – Time To Go (Outplay) From “On The Fritz EP”. I’m really enthusiastic about the whole EP, which I think are Daniël’s best productions to date.

(Sneaky nr 4. Session Victim – Stick Together (Delusions of Grandeur) From their new album, which I really love. This track has this quality of getting stuck in your head. <3)

Pas sur que ce soit des sons pour retourner un dancefloor mais voici les choses que j’aime:

Harvey Sutherland – Oscillate (Voyage Recordings) de l’EP « Brothers » de Harvey Sutherland, c’est la deuxième release de Voyage, et elle est magnifique! J’ai jamais autant attendu un EP depuis leur première sortie.

Brame & Hamo – Clockwerk (Splendor & Squalour) c’est la première sortie de Brame & Hamo sur leur label Splendor & Squalour et elle est énorme! Que ce soit le remix de Session Victim Remix ou les deux morceaux de Brame and Hamo individuellement.

Daniel Leseman – Time To Go (Outplay) de l’EP “On The Fritz”. J’aime vraiment tout l’EP, je pense que c’est les meilleures productions de Danïel à ce jour!

(Un quatrième en scred, Session Victim – Stick Together (Delusions of Grandeur) de leur nouvel album que j’adore. Ce morceau te colle au cerveau <3)

What are your coming plans? Any gig, new release or project? // Quels sont tes projets? Des dates, une nouvelle sortie ou autre chose?

A lot will be happing next year! Another solo EP will be coming up on a label I’m really excited about (and can’t tell any details about yet), a remix and other V.A. releases. I’m working on lots of new material.

I’ve been experimenting a bit with some beatdown HipHop kind of tracks, which I’d love to do more of.

With Fouk we’ve just joined Jack Music Agency and already there are some nice bookings coming in!

There is a Fouk EP coming up and another one in the making. We’re working on two remixes at the moment, so enough to keep us busy. We’ve been getting a lot of attention on our Fouk project, which we can’t be happier about!

Beaucoup de choses vont se passer l’année prochaine! Un autre EP solo sur un label qui me chauffe trop (je peux pas trop en parler pour le moment), un remix et des sorties sur des compilations. Je travaille sur beaucoup de sons actuellement.

Par ailleurs, je m’expérimente à un peu de HipHop et j’aimerais bien en faire plus.

Avec Fouk on vient juste de rejoindre l’agence Jack Music et y a de belles dates qui s’annoncent!

Il y a un EP qui arrive et un autre dans les tuyaux. On travaille sur deux remixs en ce moment et c’est suffisant pour nous occuper. On a attiré beaucoup d’attention avec le projet Fouk et on en est ravis!

And the Limonadier’s question, if you were a drink what would you be? // La question du Limonadier, si tu étais une boisson tu serais quoi?

Matusalem Rum Gran Reserva 15 yrs.

I love this rum, while I’m sure there are even nicer ones, it’s perfect for late night studio sessions or sitting on our balcony in those smooth summer nights
