Le Mondial du Tatouage aura lieu ces 6, 7 et 8 mars dans la grande halle de la Villette, et nous y serons présents. Pour l’occasion, JBMT vous a concocté une sélection tatouage qui prend aujourd’hui des couleurs grâce à Deno, tatoueur et street-artist d’origine espagnole.

Si aujourd’hui le tatouage s’offre une image assagie auprès de la majorité de la population, il n’en oublie pas pour autant ses racines underground. C’est pourquoi de nombreux tatoueurs fricotent avec le monde du street-art, souvent pour notre plus grand bonheur. En France, on pense par exemple à la renommée équipe du salon Bleu-Noir, perché sur la colline de Montmartre, avec Supakitch, Veenom ou Jeykill.
Notre tatoueur d’aujourd’hui, Deno, fait partie de ces trublions passant du dermographe à la bombe de peinture. D’origine madrilène, il a suivi des études de philosophie, et sa passion pour l’Art depuis l’enfance l’a finalement amené au tattoo qu’il n’a plus quitté. On le retrouve aujourd’hui entre Madrid et Londres au Seven Doors Tattoo Club. Il organise aussi des sessions de graff au sein du duo Bacteria Art Group qu’il compose avec l’artiste espagnol Sins, avec qui il travaille sur une exposition de leurs peintures. Son célèbre frère Jon Dix tatoue lui aussi dans un registre très différent, fait d’entrelacs géométriques et de figures asiatiques en noir et blanc.
Les tatouages et les graffs de Deno se rejoignent dans leur esthétique. Très coloré, avec de profonds aplats de couleurs saturées et de larges cernes noirs, ce style naïf rappelle de loin le tatouage old school. Il est peuplé d’un bestiaire fantastique plein entre autres de créatures marines, de motifs abstraits délicats, et surtout hanté par sa signature : un crâne stylisé légèrement ovoïde, au regard fixe moqueur.
Le crâne est notre memento mori, c’est le symbole universel de notre existence finie dans l’univers. La manière dont je le dessine, c’est l’évolution de sa forme après que je l’ai fait des milliers de fois… J’adore l’inclure dans chaque design parce qu’il y crée une histoire, spécialement avec les animaux !
On comprend en effet que Deno se crée son propre répertoire de références, son propre monde aux significations poétiques, où les animaux tiennent une place capitale.

J’adore les animaux depuis que je suis enfant. Je les dessinais tout le temps. Cela fait partie de mon imaginaire, de ma manière personnelle de regarder les choses. Après bien sûr c’est aussi des demandes des clients, et ensuite après le mélange de leurs idées et de mon interprétation, le tatouage apparaît.
Cet univers et ce style particuliers rappellent beaucoup d’inspirations variées, du cartoon au street art en passant par le tatouage traditionnel. Lorsqu’on lui parle d’Art, Deno évoque son amour des musées et cite avec enthousiasme son coup de cœur pour la dernière exposition du Museo Del Prado à Madrid sur les peintures de Goya. Cependant, ce qui lui tient à cœur concernant ses œuvres, plus que des influences précises, c’est sa propre capacité et s’imprégner de différentes sources pour livrer quelque chose de très personnel :
C’est ma manière naturelle de dessiner, j’essaie de juste de me concentrer sur mes idées et de développer mon imaginaire personnel. Parfois nos propres limitations nous apprennent à mieux faire les choses. Ma véritable inspiration est de garder un regard ouvert sur le monde, les bonnes idées sont partout, d’un bon tableau à une chanson géniale.

On the occasion of the Mondial du Tatouage which will take place on March 6th, 7th and 8th in the great hall of la Villette, and where we’ll go to have un look around, some color finally shows up in the tattoo section of JBMT. We had a conversation with Deno, a tattoo and street-artist from Spain.
If today the Tattoo world has managed to have a chastened image for a majority of people, it doesn’t forget its underground roots. That’s why numerous tattooists rub shoulders with the street art world, often for the best. In France for instance, we can think of the well-known Bleu-Noir crew, perched on the Montmartre Hill, with Supakitch, Veenom or Jeykill.

Our tattoo-artist for today, Deno, is one of these troublemakers going from the dermograph to the spray can. From Madrid, where he studied Philosophy, his passion for Art since he was a child eventually led him to tattooing, which he never quit. We can now find him between Madrid and London in the Seven Doors Tattoo Club. He also organizes graffiti art sessions with the duo called the Bacteria Art Group, made of the Spanish artist Sins and himself, and with whom he is currently setting up a painting exhibition. His famous brother Jon Dix also tattooes in a very different way, based on geometrical interlacing and Asian figures in black and white.
The tattoos and the graffiti art that Deno makes meet on a same aesthetic. Very colourful, with deep tint areas of saturated colors and wide black outlines, this kind of naïve style reminds us somehow of old school tattooing. It is inhabited with a fantastical bestiary with among others marine creatures, delicate abstract patterns. It is especially haunted by his signature: a stylized skull, lightly ovoid, with a fix and mocking gaze.
The skull is our memento mori; it can be mine or yours, it´s the universal symbol of our finite existence in the universe. The way I draw them is the evolution of a shape after doing it thousands of times….I love to include it in every design because there is a story behind this, especially with animals!
Indeed, we understand that Deno creates for himself his own range of references, his own world with poetical significances, where animals play a capital part.
I love animals since I was a kid. I use to draw them all the time. It´s part of my imagination, my personal way to look at things. Then also it´s of course the customer who ask you for something, and after the magic mix of his idea and my interpretation, the tattoo happens.
These peculiar universe and style remind us of very diverse inspirations, from cartoon to street-art including traditional tattooing. When it comes to Art, Deno tells us about his love for museums and mentions with great enthusiasm how he loved the last exhibition in the Museo Del Prado in Madrid dealing with Goya paintings. However, what really matters for him concerning his works, more than precise influences, is his own ability to soak up different sources to turn in something very personal.

It´s my natural way to draw, I just try to concentrate in my ideas and develop my personal imaginary world. Sometimes your own limitations teach you how to do things better. My inspiration is to keep my eyes open to the world; good ideas are everywhere, from a good painting to an amazing song.
