Is the accordion rock n' roll ? I'm not sure, but bands such as Beirut or the Swedish Detektivbyrån use it in their pop music. And it works pretty well. The first artist with an accordion and a pop spirit I heard was the French Yann Tiersen though. The guy who did the soundtrack of the movie Amélie from Montmartre.
Thomas Hermansson from Thieves & Beggars recognizes the Tiersen influence and some older ones as well. After having recorded 4 or 5 songs with his band, he plans to go back into studio in winter and maybe record a proper album for spring. His music is probably not successfully completed yet. Certainly not as catchy as Detektivbyrån and less poetic than Yann Tiersen, but for a start this is a quite interesting one, and I'm not the one a strong tune, which reminds some Bright Eyes songs.
The funny thing : before to play some delicate accordion tunes, he used to be in a punk band. Yeah, accordion music is the new punk.

C'est rock n' roll l'accordéon ? Je ne suis pas si sûr, mais des groupes tels que Beirut ou les Suédois de Detektivbyrån l'ont bien utilisé dans leur pop. Bon, euh, après, puisque nous sommes entre Français, vous conviendrez qu'ils doivent tout à Yann Tiersen.
Thomas Hermansson de Thieves & Beggars reconnaît lui-même l'influence de Tiersen et d'autres plus anciennes. Après avoir mis en boîte 4 ou 5 chansons avec son groupe, il compte retourner en studio cet hiver avant d'enregistrer, pourquoi pas, un album au printemps prochain. Sa musique n'est pas encore tout à fait aboutie. Sans doute moins séduisante que Detektivbyrån et moins poétique que Yann Tiersen, mais pour des débuts, c'est pas si mal. I'm not the one est même une vraie réussite, le genre de chanson que pourrait chanter Bright Eyes.
Chose amusante : avant de jouer des ballades à l'accordéon, Thomas faisait partie d'un groupe de punk. Ouais, l'accordéon : du punk 2.0.
