En 1967, après avoir enregistré Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, les Beatles se mettent à l'ouvrage pour leur album suivant, qui sera d'un genre très particulier : la musique d'un TVfilm diffusé sur la BBC, un album et TVfilm psychédélique du nom de Magical Mystery Tour, relatant les aventures magiques d'un groupe de touristes embarqués par les Beatles dans un bus, pour un voyage fabuleux.
Le TVfilm sera un bide (diffusé en noir & blanc, jugé trop farfelu), mais l'album sera une grosse vente. Sur la première face, les 6 morceaux de la bande-son. Sur la seconde face, 5 singles indépendants.
Il existe aussi une version double 45-tours proposant uniquement les titres de la B.O. du film. J'ai décidé de vous proposer, aujourd'hui, deux chansons issues de la bande-son de Magical Mystery Tour.

La première, située en-dessous de ce paragraphe, c'est le sublime The Fool On The Hill, interprétée par Paul McCartney, qui parle d'un homme vivant seul sur une colline, considéré comme fou par tout le monde, mais qui semblerait, en fait, bien plus sensé que n'importe qui (He knows they are the fools).
Le clip est celui du TVfilm, il faut attendre environ 45 secondes pour que la chanson ne démarre. On y voit un Macca sur une colline, symbolisant le 'dingue' de la chanson.
Une chanson douce, presque une berceuse à chanter aux enfants, un titre bucolique, mélancolique, touchant. Un des sommets du groupe.
Une des chansons qui, avec A Day In The Life, Strawberry Fields Forever, Eleanor Rigby, She's Leaving Home et Something, me procurera toujours des frissons quand je l'écoute, tellement elle est belle. 

Seconde chanson, le psychédélique I Am The Walrus interprété par John Lennon. Lennon reconnaîtra avoir été sous influence de LSD lors de l'écriture de cette chanson, notamment les deux premiers vers (voir plus bas pour les paroles).
Ca semble évident que faire une chanson parlant d'un pilchard escaladant la Tour Eiffel, entre autres, montre qu'on n'est pas dans un état physiologique naturel. I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the Walrus, GOO GOO GOO JOOB.
On recherchera pendant longtemps le sens caché de cette chanson (dont le clip, là aussi, juste en-dessous, est celui du clip du TVfilm).
Dites, et s'il n'y avait pas de sens caché, au fait ? Hein, vous en pensez quoi ? En tout cas, chanson aussi grandiose que barrée, et le clip n'arrange rien, en montrant les Beatles fringués comme sur la pochette (hideuse) de l'album, une pochette que les Stones plagieront un peu pour leur Their Satanic Majesties Request (la bordure nuageuse psyché de la pochette), en plus de plagier celle du Sgt. Pepper's.... Le clip est farfelu, amusant, et illustre bien la chanson.

Voici donc deux immenses chansons, issues d'un album généralement un peu moins bien estimé que les deux monstres qui l'entourent dans la discographie du groupe (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band et le Double Blanc), mais qui est, selon moi, leur meilleure oeuvre dans le domaine psychédélique.
Leur ultime oeuvre psychédélique, aussi, car dès 1968, avec le Double Blanc et la chanson Lady Madonna, ils retourneront à un rock plus traditionnel. Magical Mystery Tour est un chef d'oeuvre.
C'est juste dommage que la face B (les singles) vienne casser la cohésion de l'ensemble, malgré le fait que lesdits singles ne sont nuls autres que Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love, Hello, Goodbye, Baby You're A Rich Man et le cultissime Strawberry Fields Forever (que j'aborderai demain, par ailleurs). Autrement dit, du lourd, du bon, du grandiose même. Oui, cet album, bien qu'à moitié bande-son et à moitié compil de singles, est un monstre !
