Une leçon d’optimisme

De mon plus lointain souvenir, Kissy Sell Out c’est la couverture d’iDJ consacrant le bonhomme dj de l’année (2007) alors qu’il finissait tout juste ses études. Une montée en reconnaissance fulgurante où il se voit confier une nouvelle émission sur BBC Radio 1, In New Djs We Trust, jouant toute l’electro du moment, jusqu’aux morceaux qu’on faisait tourner ici même ! “Un jour, alors que j’étais devant un écran d’ordinateur pour gagner moins de 13£ par semaine dans un magazine de mode, je me suis rendu compte que personne ne réaliserait tes plus grands rêves et aspirations pour toi - tu dois sortir de ce monde et le faire par toi-même ! Petit, j’ai vu “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” et depuis je voulais vivre comme Keanu Reeves dans le film : pour la musique et passer mon temps à fouiner dans d’énormes piles de vieux disques.” Aujourd’hui encore, pour prendre le pouls de la scène electro, il suffit de l’écouter le jeudi soir. Un éternel enfant qui a toujours “le même plaisir à aider d’autres personnes” : un paquet d’artistes lui est reconnaissant d’avoir eu leurs demos playlistées. “Mon émission de radio à la BBC m’a permis de découvrir plein de nouvelles musiques de rookies“.

C’est donc sur le thème de sa jeunesse que Kissy Sell Out a réalisé son premier album, mêlant ses influences: Gary Newman, Scritti Politti, Simple Minds, Sonic Youth, Armand Van Helden… “Je savais que je voulais faire un disque basé sur des chansons, mais j’ai eu du mal à écrire tout un scénario de fiction. Au moment de passer en production, ma plus grande préoccupation était que j’avais l’impression d’avoir perdu mon enfance sans que je m’en aperçoive. Ca m’a énormément pertubé et je voulais faire un album qui encapsule ce sentiment qu’on a à l’intérieur de soi lorsqu’on se remémore ses souvenirs d’enfance préférés.” Des moments de vie dans lesquels Kissy Sell Out espère que chacun(e) s’identifiera à l’exemple de ce titre.

“Si quelqu’un n’a jamais entendu la raison pour laquelle je suis venu avec le nom de “Kissy”, ils sauront que ça vient surtout des mélanges d’alcools en tout genre qu’on s’enquillait aux grosses fêtes d’anniversaire qu’il y avait souvent au fond de mon jardin et qui me faisaient faire des rêves bizarres quand j’allais me coucher ! Ce morceau relate quelques souvenirs de ces soirées qui commencent par un de mes amis qui s’est endormi dans l’herbe pendant la nuit, se réveille à 7 heures du mat’ avec ses vêtements trempés par la rosée et marche à travers ma maison en évitant le vomi et les verres pétés et en enjambant les gens qui dorment par terre.”

Au vue de sa discographie officielle (essentiellement des remixes), il est à contre-courant des djs/producteurs actuels sortant des maxis avant de songer à un éventuel album. Coup de poker ? Non. Kissy Sell Out tient à son indépendance, indépendance qu’il garde en tête pour son propre label San City High. “La DA des maisons de disques est un concept étrange qui m’a laissé de mauvais souvenirs lorsque j’étais chez Atlantic Records et c’est pourquoi j’essaie de ne pas trop interférer avec la musique de mes artistes. Après tout, si je dois passer des heures à bidouiller un morceau pour mon label, ce n’est plus leur musique et je déteste ça. Je suis intéressé par des gens qui ont une vision claire de leur propre musique et un enthousiasme intact comme moi. Je pense que la clé pour diriger son label c’est d’être passionné par la musique que tu sors et tous ceux qui signent sur mon label savent ça.”

“That’s the story of a cool nerd studying @ Essex who finally became a major dj/producer…” What’s your magic recipe of an unbelievable success ?

Haha ! I wouldn’t say I’ve had any type of unbelievable success although I’m flattered by your statement ! I think if I had any type of magic recipe it would simply be to stop looking for a magic recipe and just get on with your life doing the things you’ve always wanted to do. I sent hundreds of demo CDs to people for years before I realised one day while staring at a computer screen in central London earning minus 13 pounds a week at a fashion magazine that noone you meet in your life will achieve your greatest dreams and aspirations for you - you have to go out into the world and do it for yourself !

Ever since I saw “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” when I was a kid I’ve wanted to live like Keanu Reeves in that film, living for the music and spending my time rifling through huge piles of old records. Before I realised that I used to find it hard to get out of bed in the morning but now I make the most of every day just incase this all ends tomorrow.

Mullet hair cut, ultra-skinny jeans (legging?) : have you tried to copyright tektonik look ? haha !

Hmm I just need to look up “Tektonik” on Google…….. I think you’re talking about either the “Online & Onsite IT Experts” or “Tektonik - the new dance craze?” hehe. I hope it doesn’t disapoint you too much to hear that I chopped off my mullet hair-do over a year ago now - but I still sport pretty tight jeans.

Checking your official discography, i know you more as dj than producer even if you worked with some major artists as producer. Few original EPs, some featurings and essentially loads of remixes. What has prevailed on you to engine this album ? It’s against the current of most dj/producers…

I think I often seem to be against the current of most dj/producers really. I’m not desperately trying to be different - my life would certainly be alot easier if I didn’t keep experimenting with my music but then I would feel pretty unfulfilled. My debut album “Youth” is a concept album about my childhood. I knew I wanted to make a record that was song-based but I struggled to think of any fictional scenarios to write about. At the time my album went into production my biggest worry was that it felt like my childhood had suddenly disappeared without me noticing. I found that tremendously upsetting and I wanted to make an album that encapsulated that feeling you get inside when you reminisce of your favourite childhood memories. It also felt like a very honest and unpretentious thing to write music about.

I’m still surprised by your unfailing enthusiasm. You are an eternal kid !

If you’re writing about the things you care most deeply about in the world it’s not hard to feel enthusiastic! I get the same pleasure from helping other people with my record label San City High. My BBC radio show has helped me discover loads of new music from under-the-radar talent but being able to release records by my own personal favourite artists of the moment is a great honour! Some of the records I am releasing have been playing regulars in my DJ sets for months and months but never officially released by another label - so I snapped them up as quickly as I could and enjoy every second of working their music !

Still about your enthusiasm, you tries to help rookies in your weekly radio show. It seems you felt in love with Lazy Flow since we sent you his Cabaret Hologramme remix for our label BAF Musique. Could you talk to us about San City High and his new A&R ?

Don’t think I’ve heard his Cabaret Hologramme remix, you should send it to me because I bet it’s a winner! Everything that boy touches turns to gold in my eyes. It was those crazy “Flamingo” & “Mambo Fever” demos that left my jaw on the floor when I first heard of him. Like me he avoids any hint of repetition in his tracks and with his keen eye for killer hooks I reckon he’s set for big things in the future!

A&Ring records is a strange concept which I’ve had bad experiences of when I was signed to Atlantic records so I try not to interfere with my artists’ music too much - afterall if I have to spend hours sprucing up a track for your label it stops being their music and I hate that. Their are some tracks called “Monster” and “Court Jester” coming out on my label soon which knock the crap out of the dancefloor everytime and I’m really excited about you hearing them soon !

I’m interested in people who have a clear vision of their own music and raw enthusiasm like me. Something I guess is key with running your own record label is being passionate about the music you are releasing and I think everyone signed to my label knows that.
