It happened this morning. I just had orange juice and coffee and was walking down the streets of Paris. Patrik Backlund was singing Seesaw in my headphones and I felt like seven or eight years ago, while I was listening to the latest Broder Daniel record, waiting for the subway in Stockholm, Bergshamra station. Sure it was cold, but the sun was on its way.
No hype. No label. No record released yet. But, trust me: Patrik Backlund is the Swedish guy you were looking for. At least, the one I was looking for! An artist who can write great melodic pop songs, but with a rock spirit. If Seesaw is "broderdanielish", Outspoken and plain reminds The Smiths. Both are brilliant. Actually, there is no bad song I heard recorded by Patrik Backlund.
If you have a look at his MySpace page, you will not believe it. It shows only 1541 "profile views". I suppose Kim Fastesson from Penny Century (if you have not listened to their latest single James Hurley, just go there) was not totally wrong when he told me Patrik was "one of Sweden's best kept secret". Penny C's singer Julia Hanberg went further : Patrik Backlund is an arsonist was her favourite 2010 record ex-aequo with the Bear Quartet one.

Actually, this record has not been released yet. It is supposed to be out digitally and on vinyl this spring. Let me tell you it is gonna be great. A "do it yourself" album that does not sound DIY at all. I'm pretty sure in few months many Swedish kids will whistle his songs. No blog mentionned it yet. I hope some other will follow (yes, this is a call!). Honestly, I have not heard anything that great for many many months.

C'est arrivé ce matin. J'avais pris un jus d'orange et un café et marchais dans les rues de Paris.Patrik Backlund chantait Seesaw dans mes écouteurs et je me sentais revenir sept ou huit ans en arrière, alors que j'écoutais le dernier disque de Broder Daniel, en attendant le métro de Stockholm, station Bergshamra. Ok il faisait froid, mais les rayons de soleil perçaient.
Pas de hype. Pas de label. Pas de disque. Mais faites-moi confiance : Patrik Backlund est le Suédois que vous attendiez ! Un artiste capable d'écrire d'excellentes chansons pop mélodiques, mais avec un esprit résolument rock. Si Seesaw est "broderdanielisant", Outspoken and plainévoque plutôt The Smiths. Tous deux sont excellentes. En fait, Patrik Backlund n'a, à ma connaissance, jamais enregistré de mauvaise chanson.
Si vous zieutez sa page MySpace, vous n'en croirez pas vos yeux. Seulement 1541 "profile views". Je suppose que Kim Fastesson de Penny Century (si vous n'avez pas encore écouté le dernier single du groupe, James Hurley, allez donc là) n'avait pas tout à fait tort lorsqu'il me disait que Patrik était "l'un des secrets les mieux gardés de Suède". En réalité, ce disque ne sortira dans le commerce en vinyle et format digital qu'au printemps prochain. Laissez-moi vous dire qu'il sera génial. Un album "do it yourself" qui ne sonne pas du tout DIY. Je vous parie que dans quelques mois de nombreux ados suédois siffleront ses chansons. En attendant, puisque je suis le premier blog à évoquer Patrik, je lance un appel à tous les autres : parlez-en vous aussi ! Honnêtement, il s'agit de la meilleure musique que j'ai entendue depuis des mois.
