About Khal TORABULLY's GOLDEN AWARD obtained in CAIRO (Egypt).

Le film La mémoire maritime des arabes a obtenu le Golden Award du Cairo Arab Media Festival le 24 décembre 2010.

Il récompense le meilleur documentaire du Moyen-Orient, des émirats et de l’Afrique du Nord, en somme des tous les pays arabes, notamment les productions de leurs télévisions nationales ou privées.
Réalisé par Khal Torabully, et récemment traduit en arabe pour être projeté lors des célébrations officielles des 40 ans du règne du Sultan Qaboos à Oman, il  a remporté ce Golden Award pour ses qualités exceptionnelles.

SUMMARY :

We aim at bringing to the highlight the dense maritime history of the Arabo-Muslims through  geographical, religious, cultural, scientific and commercial angles.

The birth of Islam and its subsequent developments will drastically change the geopolitical data and favour new sciences. At the 1Oth Century, the Golden Age of Islam, the Arabs and other Muslims have charted an unequalled maritime power.

New navigational skills and geographical techniques are devised.

We bring to mind the steps made by muslim cartographers.

This film surveys the major scientists and travellers, who have made significant contributions to geography, cartography, astronomy... It relays the cultural background and historical facts to enable us to understand why the Arabo-Muslims’ maritime strategies had far reaching effects. It also brings to mind subsequent contacts between the Europeans and the Muslims in view of controlling searoutes and trade circuits.

Then, we dwell on the specific traits of trade and culture in the Indian Ocean, specially Oman, India, China, Mauritius and Zanzibar : shipbuilding and navigators, the creation of trading posts, cultural facets and navigational techniques, besides architectural and sociologocial aspects that bear testimony to that dense memory.

We follow a ship on one of its voyages, explore the conditions of navigation, the circuits, the products taken from the East, the distribution to the Middle East and the Mediterranean. The cultural encounter is one of the foremost dimension of this document.

This is the first film focussing on this topic, with a view to bringing together the rich traditions of the Indian Ocean countries and their interaction with the West.

ECHO DANS LA PRESSE

Présenté dans le cadre du Cairo Arab Media Festival, La mémoire océanique des Arabes (The maritime memory of the Arabs), un film réalisé par le Mauricien Khal Torabully, y a décroché le Golden Award. Ce film de 52 minutes a été tourné pour être projeté dans le cadre des 40 ans du règne du Sultan Qaboos, à Oman.

" Mo très fier mo kamarad Khal ! Au nom du gouvernement, je te présente nos félicitations ! Nous sommes tous très fiers qu'un Mauricien en soit arrivé à ce point là et ait décroché une telle distinction. Nous te remercions pour l'honneur que tu confères au pays à travers ce prix ", a affirmé hier le ministre des Arts et de la Culture. Mookhesswur Choonee, qui présentait Khal Torabully et son film lors d'une rencontre avec la presse.

Le principal concerné n'a pas caché sa satisfaction : " Je suis très content qu'un petit Mauricien comme moi ait pu battre des équipes de télévision aussi connues et réputées du monde arabe telles qu'Al-Jazira, entre autres ", a-t-il déclaré. 

La mémoire océanique des Arabo-Musulmans a été tourné dans plusieurs pays, Tunisie, Maroc, Zanzibar, Inde, Chine, France, Angleterre, Portugal et Espagne. Sollicité pour savoir si son film sera diffusé à la MBC, l'artiste s'y est dit favorable. Le ministre Choonee, pour sa part, a évoqué une projection au Théâtre Serge Constantin. " Pour la MBC, la décision revient au DG Dan Callikan ", dit-il.

Originaire de Maurice et établi en France, Khal Torabully a aussi profité de l'occasion pour " remercier mon cameraman, qui travaille pour France 2 ". Il a laissé comprendre qu'il travaille actuellement sur un deuxième film, " qui traitera de l'engagisme ". S'adressant à M. Choonee, il devait préciser : " Vous savez à quel point j'ai à cœur le sujet de l'engagisme, M. le ministre. D'où ce projet. "

Par le biais de son film, Khal Torabully souhaite " raviver dans la mémoire des gens, et remettre au goût du jour, l'importance de l'empreinte des Arabo-Musulmans sur notre monde, en particulier dans cette partie de la terre. L'Inde et la Chine sont les nouveaux dragons du monde. Il importe de rappeler nombre de choses qui étaient connues à une certaine époque et qui ne le sont plus. Je ne dis pas que les Arabes étaient meilleurs. Ils apprenaient de différentes cultures et amélioraient leurs connaissances. En ce temps-là, il régnait une homogénéité extraordinaire ! C'est quand Vasco de Gama est venu planter ses canons dans l'océan Indien que tout a changé ! "

Produit avec le soutien financier du sultanat d'Oman, La mémoire océanique des Arabo-Musulmans existe en version française, anglaise et arabe. Khal Torabully envisage, " après concertation avec les autorités d'Oman ", de commercialiser son film en support DVD.
