Le phénomène est alors lancé et le pays saisi d’une immense frénésie. Les bulbes de tulipes qui atteignaient des sommes astronomiques s’échangeaient avec gourmandise, et devinrent l’objet d’un marché fiévreux où tous les moyens étaient bons pour se les approprier.
Ce fut la tulipomania, la première grande vague spéculative provoquée par une simple fleur qui valut plus cher qu’un tableau de Rembrandt.
