Point of (inter)View: Deepakalypse

POV et notre copine de chez Hill by the Sea ont bossé ensemble pour vous faire partager l’univers d’un artiste découvert via The Marine Layer Production: Deepakalypse.

POV / Deepak, on t’as découvert grâce aux vidéos de Dane Reynolds. Tu le connais bien? Cela doit être vraiment excitant de collaborer avec The Marine Layer Production. Comment tu as réagis lorsqu’ils t’ont demandé de participer?

D / Je ne connais pas vraiment Dane… Je l’ai rencontré une seule fois lorsque sa vidéo est sortie dans ma ville natale, à Ventura. Je crois que c’était en 2005… peut être 2006. J’ai joué quelques chansons après la projection. Il a été super cool avec moi.

C’est vraiment motivant de collaborer avec une idée aussi cool que The Marine Layer. Je n’ai pourtant pas l’impression d’apporter grand chose au projet puisque Dane ne fais qu’utiliser les chansons déjà produite qu’il préfere.

POV / Ta musique s’intègre parfaitement dans l’univers du surf. Tu pratiques également?

D / Je ne surf pas vraiment en fait… J’adore ça mais je peux pas supporter l’eau froide ! Il faut vraiment que je déménage là où il fait plus chaud ! Cela dit j’aime bien le longboard… Parce que je suis pas super bon en short hahaha

POV / Si le surf et le mode de vie Californien semblent pleinement t’inspirer, d’où viennent tes autres influences?

D / Je suis inspiré par une mutitude de choses ! La nouvelle Orléans m’a beaucoup inspiré et a certainement inspiré mon style. Mais il y a aussi des groupes comme Modest mouse, The Pixies, pas mal de punk, du reggae, du jazz… et tellement plus…

POV / Quelqu’un que tu admires? Dans la musique ou n’importe où?

D / J’admire tellement de groupes et de personnes ! Ce serait impossible de tout référencer ici mais je vais essayer de vous donner les plus influents… Il y a Isaac Brock de Modest Housse, sa musique et ses paroles sont tellements incroyables qu’elles m’impressionent toujours ! Il ya également le groupe Pavement, Pixies, Janes addiction…

POV / Comment qualifierais-tu la scène musicale française?

D / Je ne connais pas vraiment la scène musicale française car je n’y ai été que de passage pendant quelques semaines. J’ai joué pour un open mic qui s’appelle Pop in. Une super expérience. Ce mec, David, qui produisait le show, c’était le chanteur du groupe Herman Dune…

Bref… Quand on parle de musique française je pense surtout à Django Reinhardt… Il était français nan ? hahaha

Et sinon, j’aime beaucoup Phoenix, et là, je suis sur qu’ils sont français !

POV / Quand on écoute tes morceaux on ne comprends pas pourquoi tu n’es pas encore une super star… Comment ça se fait?

D / Je pense que je ne suis pas une super star parce que je n’essaye pas vraiment. Composer de la musique est extrêmement important pour moi, et c’est devenu une nécessité, c’est ce qui me rend le plus heureux aujourd’hui. Je ne le fais pour aucune autre raison que celle d’être heureux…

J’espère qu’un jour je pourrais ne vivre que de l’argent que me rapporte la musique mais pour le moment…. Je galère. J’éspere qu’une fois le nouvel album sortit, je pourrais sauter dans ma voiture, jouez chaque soir pour 50$, ce qui me permettrais de payer le trajet pour la ville suivante…

POV / Comment te vois-tu dans 5 ans?

D / Dans 5 ans, j’espère jouer à Coachella et partir sur une tournée mondiale… J’espère que tout ça prendra vraiment forme sous 5 ans…

POV / Bon allez, tu viens quand nous voir en France?

POV / So Deepak, we met you through Dane Reynolds’ videos. You know him well ? I bet it must be super exciting to collaborate with The Marine Layer Production. How did you feel when he asked you to participate ?

D / I actually don’t really know Dane that well… I met him once when his video came out in our home town of Ventura…. I think this was in 2005 or 06… I played some songs after the movie played…. he was super cool to me. Its great to collaborate with such a rad idea like marine layer…. there’s not much to it on my end cause Dane is just using songs of mine that have already been recorded and just using what he likes …

POV / Your music fits perfectly with the surfing environment. Do you surf yourself ? If so, What kind of board do you like riding the most ?

D / I don’t surf that much myself…. I do love it but I can’t stand the cold! I need to move somewhere where the water is warm! I like long boards cause Im not that good haha

POV / If surfing and the Californian way of life might influence your songs, what else inspire you ?

D / Im inspired by lots of stuff… new orleans really inspired me and influenced my style but bands like modest mouse, the pixies, lots of punk stuff in my early days to reggae and jazz and beyond…

POV / Any one you admire ? In music or elsewhere ?

D / I admire so many bands and people! It would be impossible to write it all here but I’ll give you a few major influences for me…. Isaac Brock of modest mouse… his music and lyrics are soooo awesome it blows my mind! Also the band Pavement , Pixies, Janes addiction…

POV / Could you qualify the european and french music scene. How do you see it from the US ?

D / I don’t know the French music scene that well because I was only there once for a couple of weeks … I played an open mic type thing at a bar called ” pop in” that was really cool.. this guy david hosted it, he was the singer of that band called herman dune…. I think of Djengo Reihardt a lot when thinking of french music …. he was french wasn’t he? haha… but I really like that band phoenix and I know that they are french .

POV / When I listen to your work, I don’t get why you are not a super star, playing on huge festivals… How come you are not ?

D / I guess Im not a huge star cause I just haven’t tried hard enough…. Writing music is super important to me and has become and necessity in my being alive and is what keeps me most happy… I can’t do it for any other reason than just helping me be happy. I hope to one day reach a point where I can live solely off the money I make from music but right now Im struggling… I hope to hop in my car when this new album is done and cruz the country just playing solo shows and making maybe fifty bucks a day so I can just get to the next town and play.

POV / How do you picture yourself in 5 years (this question looks like a job interview, but still…) ?

D / In five years I hope to be playing Coachella and touring the world… actually I hope that all comes to life in the next two years!!

POV / When are you planning to come in France ?

D / No plans for France right now but this interview will hopefully change alll that!
