Les fidèles de Radio Nova ont peut-être déjà entendu la douce voix de Yuri Méndez Barrios, alias Pajaro Sunrise. Pour les autres, séance de rattrapage avec l’aérien morceau Minolta ci-dessous. Originellement catégorisé comme folk, ce chanteur-auteur-producteur-musicien espagnol a mélangé les influences pour son dernier album, Kulturkatzenjammer. Un petit démiurge qui compose des morceaux dignes de la BO de Drive.
Quelles sont les personnes qui t’inspirent le plus (pas seulement dans le monde de la musique)?
Je ne pense pas qu’il y ait une seule personne qui m’inspire. Bien sûr, il y a les modèles “évidents”, comme mon père. En terme de musique… Quand j’étais petit, j’aimais Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, tout ça. Pour ce qui est de la littérature, la découverte de Carl Jung a été un véritable choc pour moi.
Quelles sont tes principales influences?
Elles ont changé au fil des ans. Au départ, j’écoutais beaucoup de folk, de country et de soul. J’ai essayé de m’intéresser à tout, j’écoutais du jazz et de la musique classique. Énormément de blues, de l’électro bien sûr… Presque tout.
Si tu veux découvrir de nouvelles musiques, où vas-tu les chercher?
Ces derniers temps, je me sers beaucoup de Spotify. On a eu pas mal de débats sur le sujet avec des amis, mais je trouve que c’est vraiment utile. Je suis né en 1979, et quand j’ai commencé à écouter de la musique c’était toujours un combat pour en trouver, particulièrement en Espagne. Ce type de site est donc vraiment pratique, même si ça détruit une partie de l’industrie musicale – et encore, je n’en suis pas sûr.
Donc tu n’as pas de problème avec le téléchargement illégal?
Je suppose que non, étant donné que je ne vends pas beaucoup d’albums ça ne me concerne pas. Je ne fais pas de la musique dans le but de m’enrichir. Je veux que les gens écoutent ma musique, et elle est disponible sur internet : tu n’as même pas besoin de rendre la chose illégale !
Où préfères-tu t’installer pour composer?
Il n’y a pas un lieu en particulier, mais j’ai un petit home studio où je passe beaucoup de temps. Avant, j’avais l’habitude de composer des chansons avec la télé allumée, pendant un match de foot, parce que j’adore le vert du terrain sur l’écran, et avoir un bruit de fond.
Tu n’as donc pas besoin d’un endroit calme pour écrire?
Non, je trouve que quand c’est calme, tu es trop seul face à toi-même !
Tu as fait le choix de mettre un mot en espagnol dans ton nom ; est-ce une façon d’afficher le fait que tu viens d’Espagne?
Oui, peut-être pour la contradiction que ça entraîne, à côté d’un mot en anglais. Je chante en anglais, parce que j’ai choisi de me tourner vers l’international et que c’est plus facile ainsi, mais je suis bien conscient que c’est un peu ridicule : j’ai un accent quand je parle, je fais des fautes, et je ne peux pas me débarrasser de ça. Mais ce n’est pas grave !
Penses-tu que le fait d’être espagnol change quelque chose pour toi, dans le monde de la musique?
C’est une question complexe… J’ai beaucoup réfléchi à ça dernièrement, à ce que ça signifie pour moi d’être espagnol, et je suis mitigé. Tu sais, on est toujours attaché à l’endroit où on est né, même si on ne l’aime pas. Je peux dire que j’aime beaucoup l’Espagne, mais parfois vivre là-bas rend les choses difficiles : il n’y a pas de culture "pop" là-bas, quelque chose manque, et il faut passer outre.
N’as-tu pas peur de devenir un phénomène de mode, maintenant que tu t’es tourné vers l’électro?
En fait, il y avait déjà de l’électro sur le premier album, sorti en 2006. A l’époque nous étions deux dans Parajo Sunrise, mais maintenant je travaille seul chez moi. Et parfois, c’est plus simple d’utiliser un synthétiseur, de se débrouiller avec ce qu’on a plutôt que d’aller en studio et d’inviter du monde, ce qui mène à l’électro. Aussi, je trouve qu’il se passe des choses vraiment intéressantes dans ce domaine en ce moment. Mais je ne considère pas cet album comme électro, sinon pop ; je peux jouer les chansons à la guitare acoustique sans en changer la nature.
Pourquoi avoir choisi ce titre d’album, que je ne peux même pas prononcer [Kulturkatzenjammer] ?
Haha, moi non plus ! J’ai lu ce mot, et il m’est resté en mémoire. Il évoque une culture en plein mouvement, et je pense que c’est ce qu’il se passe en ce moment en Espagne, notamment à cause de la situation économique. Peut-être que nous sommes en train de nous réveiller face à des choses que l’on ne voyait, ou ne pouvait pas voir auparavant. On se pose la question de notre identité, on se demande si nous faisons vraiment partie de l’Europe, notamment vis-à-vis de l’Allemagne…
Est-ce important pour toi de maîtriser chaque étape de la création de ton album?
Oui, cette fois c’était très important pour moi – peut-être un peu trop !
Ça ne t’a pas effrayé d’être tout seul, tu n’as pas souhaité quelqu’un pour t’aider?
Non, je savais dans quoi je m’engageais ! C’était difficile par moments, mais c’est ce que je souhaitais donc je ne peux pas me plaindre. Et parfois, on n’a pas besoin de quelqu’un pour nous aider, mais de quelqu’un à combattre : une personne te dit de faire quelque chose, et tu te rends compte que tu souhaites juste faire l’opposé.
D’après toi, quelle est la meilleure ambiance pour écouter ta musique?
J’ai passé beaucoup de temps sur la route, et tout le monde aime écouter de la musique en conduisant, donc je suppose que c’est en voiture. J’ai tendance à associer la musique au mouvement, ça a un côté très cinématique.
Si Pajaro Sunrise était un personnage, qui serait-il?
Il y a ce personnage dans le roman Au dieu inconnu de Steinbeck ; c’est un gars qui s’installe dans un nouvel endroit, où il y a un arbre. Et à mesure que lui vieillit, l’arbre grandit. Je ne me souviens plus de son nom, mais il parle aux arbres !
De quel film aimerais-tu composer la BO?
Certainement L’Eclipse de Michelangelo Antonioni, avec Alain Delon et Monica Vitti.
Quel serait ton clip idéal?
J’aimerais quelque chose dans la veine des clips des Chemical Brothers, où tout dans la musique est synchronisé aux images. Et avec ça, quelque chose en mouvement : un train, une voiture, un avion, un bateau…
Et pour terminer, notre question préférée : quelle est la chanson catégorisée honteuse que tu préfères?
Oooh, il y avait ce morceau que j’adorais dans les années 90, ou peut-être 2000, Hanging by a moment par Lifehouse.

Some of you may already know the soft voice of Yuri Méndez Barrio, aka Pajaro Sunrise: he’s a Spanish singer, author, musician and productor, working on his own. Initially considered as a folk musician, he mixed lots of influences for his new album, Kulturkatzenjammer, which doesn’t fit in any specific music category. This little demiurge creates tracks that could have been featured on the soundtrack of the movie Drive.
Who are the persons that inspire you (not only musicians)?
I don’t think there is only one person. I have the obvious models, like my father. But for music… When I was a kid, I liked Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, all that stuff. According to literature, discovering Carl Jung was like an earthquake in my life.
What are your main influences in your music?
They have changed through the years. There was a lot of folk, country and soul music. I’ve tried to listen to almost everything, I like classical music, used to like jazz. A lot of blues, electronic music of course… almost everything.
If you want to discover new music, where do you go find it?
Lately, I’m using a lot of Spotify. We had some discussions about it with my friends, but I think it’s pretty useful. I was born in 1979, and when I started listening to music I had to really struggle to find some, especially in Spain. So it’s really convenient, even if it’s killing a side of the business – and I’m not even sure about that.
You don’t need a quiet place to create?
No, I think that in that case you’re too much with yourself!
So you’re OK with illegal downloading?
I guess, since I don’t sell many albums I’m not concerned about that. I don’t make music for commercial purposes; I don’t want to be rich. You want people to listen to your music, and it’s available on the Internet: you don’t even need to make it illegal, it’s there!
What’s your favorite place to write a song?
I don’t have one, but I have a little home studio where I spend a lot of time. I used to write a lot of songs with the TV on, and the football game on, because I love the green of the field in the screen, and the background noise!
Do you think that it changes something for you to be Spanish, in the music industry?
I can’t have a short answer for that. I’ve been thinking a lot about that lately, what it means to be Spanish and I have mixed feeling about this. You know, you love the place where you were born in, even if you don’t like it. I can say I love Spain a lot, but I think it makes things difficult because we don’t have a pop culture there, there is something missing there and you have to get over that.
Did you put the word “pajaro” [bird in Spanish] in your name to say that you come from Spain?
Yes, maybe for the contradiction with the word in English in my name. I’m singing in English, because I wanted to go abroad and it was easier like that, but I’m aware that there is a kind of ridiculous side in it: I have an accent, I make mistakes, and I cannot forget about that, but it’s fine!
Now that you’ve got into electronic music, aren’t you afraid to become "trendy"?
Actually, we began with electronic music with the first album, in 2006. At that time we were two in the “band”, but now I work on my own at home, and sometimes it’s easier to use a synthesizer to sample something. You use what you can get, and it leads to electronic music sometimes. Besides, I think that there is a lot of interesting things going on in electronic music nowadays. But this album isn’t an electronic album for me, more pop, and I can play the songs with an acoustic guitar.
Why this album title, that I can’t even pronounce [Kulturkatzenjammer]?
Haha, me neither! I read about that word and it stuck into my mind. It’s about a culture moving quite fast, and I think in Spain with the economic situation maybe we are waking up to something that we didn’t or couldn’t see before. We are wondering who we are, if we are part of Europe, especially in opposition to Germany…
Is it important for you to control each step of the creation of your album?
Yes, this time it was really important for me, too much maybe!
Were you afraid to be on you own, didn’t you want somebody to guide you?
No, I knew what was coming! It was hard sometimes, but it was what I wanted so I cannot complain. But sometimes, instead of somebody to help you, you need someone to fight. This person tells you to do something, and you realize that you want to do just the opposite.
What’s the best environment to listen to your music?
I’ve spent a lot of my life on the road, and everybody likes listening to music while driving, so I guess it would be in a car. I tend to associate music with movement, I find some cinematic quality to it.
If Pajaro Sunrise was a character, who would it be?
There is this character in a John Steinbeck novel, To a God Unknown. It’s a guy who comes to some new land, and there’s a tree. While he grows old, the tree grows bigger. I can’t remember the name of the guy, but he speaks to trees!
For which movie would you love to create a soundtrack?
Maybe L’Eclipse by Michelangelo Antonioni, with Alain Delon and Monica Vitti.
What would be your ideal music video?
Something in the way of the videos by the Chemical Brothers, in which everything in the music is synchronized to the images. With something that moves: train, car, plane, boat…
Finally, our favorite question: what’s the cheesiest song that you love?
Oooh, there was a song that I loved in the 90’s, or maybe 2000, Hanging by a moment by Lifehouse.
