Un enfant se tient immobile.
Il tient une bouteille dans ses mains.
Il y a un bateau dans la bouteille.
Il le regarde sans cligner
des yeux.
Il se demande où le petit bateau
peut naviguer s’il est retenu
prisonnier dans la bouteille.
Dans cinquante ans tu le sauras,
Captain Martin,
car la mer (vaste comme elle est)
n’est qu’une autre bouteille.

The Bottle

A child stands motionless.
He holds a bottle in his hands.
There’s a ship in the bottle.
He stares at it with eyes
that do not blink.
He wonders where a tiny ship
can sail to if it is held
prisoner in a bottle.
Fifty years from now you will
find out, Captain Martin,
for the sea (large as it is)
is only another bottle.
