Things to Keep in Mind when Looking for an Immersion Program

There are many ways of studying a language and as most people have experienced in the past, sitting in a classroom may not be an efficient or rewarding process. This, however, should not put you off especially in a different and new context. Language immersion programs typically in the host country can be a very efficient method to learn a given language.

Language immersion programs have many advantages. With these programs, you focus almost purely on language acquisition and spend most of the time with equally committed learners. Additionally, you have a perfect opportunity to get out there and start putting the language you learn into practice immediately. It is, however, important to choose the right immersion course. You need to bear the following things in mind when selecting an immersion course.

Approach

It is vital to know exactly what the learning outcomes are and hope to achieve them. This is also important to ensure you do have false expectations. Besides, you want to know if the lessons are focused on communicative skill or grammar or a mixture of both. The only way you can know this is by understanding the approach that the program will take.

Materials Used

Some schools usually have their own materials while others use coursebooks from established publishers. Others alternatively prefer using their own resources, and you may end up with hundreds of random photocopies. It is therefore wise to know if the school specifies the materials to be used in the immersion course.

Teacher's Background

Some of the teachers may be qualified but are not aware of the language learning styles which you are used to. This is prevalent for instance in the Middle-East. At times you may have only native speakers with limited teaching experience. This is fine but only for higher levels of language learning and conversation practice.

Location

The language school can be located in tourist areas where everybody speaks your language. This is particularly problematic for English speakers. You can equally be in the middle of nowhere with few opportunities to get stuck in. You need to get somewhere where you can be almost forced to interact in that language.

If you get a suitable immersion program, you can condense a lot of learning into a short time, and this will be very rewarding. The other benefit of a good immersion program is having a productive time abroad and boosting your language confidence. Undertaking imersão em inglês can help you learn English fast.
