House of Wolves l’interview

Du séminal Fold In The Wind paru en 2011 ( lire) au plus récent troisième album éponyme ( lire), Rey Villalobos, aka House Of Wolves, fait définitivement partie de ces quelques artistes avec lesquels Hartzine entretiendra toujours une histoire d'amour, du moins aussi longtemps que le californien nous gratifiera de ses chansons à la grâce et à la délicatesse infinies. Avec une constance étonnante, l'ami Rey nous avait déjà ravis il y a quelques mois avec son dernier LP qui, tout en soulignant le sens mélodique inouï de son auteur, prenait davantage d'ampleur et d'oxygène avec l'apport d'un quatuor à cordes et une section rythmique plus marquée. Une richesse sonore témoignant d'une volonté d'évolution artistique ne reniant pour autant rien d'un passé discographique frisant le sans faute. Toujours en très grande forme, c'est avec un split EP en compagnie d' Emily Jane White, à paraitre sur le label français Discolexique, que nous revient déjà House Of Wolves. Un EP sur lequel chacun reprend un titre de l'autre ( Keeley pour House Of Wolves et Just Shy Of Survival pour Emily Jane White) et se fend pour l'occasion de deux nouveaux titres. Six tracks, donc, qui trouvent ensemble une cohérence étonnante, témoignant d'une longueur d'onde partagée entre les deux artistes. Et comme ces deux-là sont loin d'être des manchots,le tout s'écoute avec délice et délectation, dans une certaine légèreté de ton sur laquelle on n'aurait pas forcément parié sur ce coup, malgré le poids émotionnel de certains textes. En témoigne notamment l'irrésistible " Up High And low " , qui dévoile une facette plutôt détendue du bulbe de son auteur.

Profitant de leur passage à Rennes le 21 mars dernier dans le cadre de leur tournée commune, et ce jour là, dans le cadre des 20 ans du festival Rennais Les Embellies, on a posé quelques questions à Rey Villalobos, déjà sept années après une première rencontre marquante.

House Of Wolves nous a également fait l'honneur d'une session live quelques heures avant son concert, nous offrant un petit moment de grâce et de générosité dans un coin de loge exigu et pas loin d'un évier, choisi par Rey Villalobos lui-même pour son acoustique et son intimité. INTERVIEW (Rennes, Église du Vieux Saint-Étienne, le 21 Mars 2018)

It's a challenge to play and present your song when you play in different situations and after each show you wonder what you can do better. I am enjoying doing it again and again. It's a work in progress all the time : to continue to be on stage and to learn and to make the set better...it's always really fun to see what you can do and it's also really a challenge to do that solo because you're just up there totally by yourself wondering how you're going to keep everyone interested for 40-45 minutes, and what can you do to the set without band. I've played with band before. I actually was in a rock band before so it hasn't really changed my perception of being on stage except when you play with band, logistics are much more complicated comparing to when you're solo. But then playing with people you click with is so awesome. I've played with a violist, Olive, in Paris, and there's my friend Mike, and when you find people like them with whom you can connect, the energy changes completely and you add just enough dynamic to be more into the moment. I did the first two solo and then the next one was recorded live, with a band -drums, base, guitar and the piano-, and when we tracked that album we were playing loud, we were rocking loud...I wanted to bring those guys but it was just so expensive...And for the next record I was wondering if I should be doing it with more mellow accoustics, or go glam rock...You can take any song and make it rock or super low-fi so I like going both and try and dicover all the possibilities for a song. I was tired of doing dark folk, I had made two folk records back to back so I wanted to something not full on crazy glam rock but different.. It's really only just a question of convenience, with this EP, we wanted to do it quickly so we worked with a guitare, and also, when touring, you don't want to carry a piano around with you...but we'd love to do a full piano album again, and in fact Christophe managed to get us a piano for our date in Lille so we're playing with just a piano in Lille on this tour. That's amazing, are you kidding me ? I feel honored...

I'm covering one of her songs and she is covering one of mine, and this is how we met : I was in Toulouse in 2015 doing a radio interview show and as they were playing songs, I heard one of her songs and I thought it was a good song, I put it then on a playlist I did for a blog. And we ended asking Emily if she wanted to do the collaboration and we met online on Facebook.

Peux-tu nous parler de la genèse du disque ? Comment avez-vous procédé pour l'écriture et l'enregistrement ?
Can you tell us about the making of the record ? How did you do its writing and recording ?
J'ai enregistré ma reprise d'Emily dans ma ville natale à coté de Santa Barbara, avec Tom Flowers dans le studio qu'il a chez lui, avec une guitare acoustique et un vieux micro des années 60, je crois. Et pour les deux titres originaux, je les ai enregistré à L.A, chez Fireproof Recordings et j'ai embauché un de mes amis, Duncan, pour jouer la guitare lead... Et moi j'ai seulement apporté ma guitare acoustique.
I recorded Emily's cover song near Santa Barbara in my home town, with Tom Flowers in his home studio with an accoustic guitare and an old sixties microphone. And for the two originals I recorded them in L.A at Fireproof Recordings and I just brought my accoustic guitare down and I hired a friend of mine, Duncan, to play the lead guitare. I like her chords progression, like in the song " Keeley ", I could feel myself in the chords progression, in her melodies. I think it's quite organic, the next one could be quite similar, folkish, quite low fi, or maybe it will be more glam rock... or maybe both... We were kind of lucky and it came rather naturally, I recorded, she played...we were really lucky. The same, a nostalgia for a more simpler time, like a love song...I'n sticking with my slogan. I didn't think about the touring aspect on that album, I just put the songs on there... I remember thinking that for the first two ones, the next one is more of a band album that needs drums and bass but for this EP I did it without any thoughts, I was just focusing on making cool songs for this project.
