‘La Mission’ Revue Sundance 2022

Beaucoup de gens se souviennent probablement d’un moment où ils ont trouvé un jeune vêtu d’une chemise et d’une cravate d’un blanc immaculé frappant à leur porte ou se promenant dans un espace public qu’ils traversaient. L’« uniforme » des missionnaires mormons lui-même évoque une réaction viscérale, selon les croyances de l’individu. Il est facile de porter un jugement sur l’Église de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours, leur héritage est bien documenté et mérite d’être examiné, mais que savons-nous de ce jeune qui n’a pratiquement aucune expérience du monde réel ? Pourquoi leur simple présence touche-t-elle si rapidement une corde sensible ?

Le nouveau documentaire La mission de la réalisatrice Tania Anderson offre un accès extérieur inégalé à un groupe de quatre jeunes missionnaires alors qu’ils se lancent dans leur premier voyage dans le monde réel pour convertir certaines des personnes les plus non religieuses d’Europe. Bien que le film ne sonde peut-être pas trop profondément la religion elle-même, le fait d’apprendre à connaître ces jeunes âmes offre une nouvelle perspective précieuse qui peut empêcher votre pouls de s’accélérer la prochaine fois que vous verrez un jeune bien habillé.

Le film commence par nous présenter brièvement les quatre jeunes fraîchement sortis du lycée qui s’apprêtent à se lancer dans une mission redoutable en Finlande : Kai, peu sûr de lui, parle penaud de son voyage devant un public ; Tyler semble fait sur mesure pour ce travail car il se vante de la façon dont il veut établir la référence en matière de conversion ; McKenna est la fanatique studieuse dont toute la famille n’est pas aussi dévouée à la foi qu’elle; et Megan est aussi proche d’un «enfant sauvage» que vous pourriez qualifier un mormon pratiquant alors qu’elle fait de longs trajets en écoutant de la musique rap. Tous les quatre habitent un archétype lâche qu’Anderson semble désireux de suivre tout en s’adaptant avec plaisir à tous les développements du monde réel provenant de ces jeunes adultes en évolution.

Le documentaire maintient un assez bon équilibre lorsqu’il s’agit de dépeindre l’église et l’impact qu’elle a sur ses fidèles. La façon dont on interprète ce qui est présenté ici dépendra en grande partie du point de vue qu’on a lorsqu’on aborde le sujet. Une rencontre que McKenna a avec sa famille et son chef d’église fournit un compte rendu de première main de l’intense concentration sur la famille qui est la pierre angulaire de la foi. Une mention désinvolte que cet homme plus âgé se mettra au travail pour organiser des rendez-vous pour elle une fois qu’elle reviendra de sa mission est déchirante, surtout plus nous apprenons à la connaître et à nous soucier d’elle. C’est une idée courante chez nos sujets et leurs compagnons : des jeunes qui ont hâte de se marier après avoir grandi avec tant de barrières qui les entourent.

L’église déploie des efforts décents pour préparer ces enfants à se rendre dans d’autres pays pour diffuser le message. Pourtant, en fin de compte, ce ne sont que des demi-mesures qui ne font que les préparer à tâtonner leur terrain tout en laissant ces jeunes effrayés à la dérive lorsque quelqu’un choisit réellement de s’engager avec eux. Cela conduit beaucoup de ces enfants à se sentir très isolés et abattus, ayant l’impression d’abandonner leur foi. Cela est aggravé par le fait que la communication avec leur famille est réduite au minimum et que les partenaires affectés à leur mission changent tous les deux mois au cours de ce voyage de deux ans. Le dévouement à leurs compagnons est censé les préparer au mariage, mais la réalité semble être un autre domaine d’instabilité dans un pays où vous vous sentez déjà incertain.

Lorsque le film se tourne vers les problèmes de santé mentale, il semble être la meilleure version de lui-même. Participer à votre mission est mythifié à un tel point qu’il va de soi que tout obstacle serait un coup brutal à votre estime de soi. Bien que la pression manifeste soit rarement montrée, la pression que chacun de ces enfants s’impose est claire comme le jour. Les réunions de groupe informelles qui éclatent parmi certains des missionnaires ressemblent presque à un groupe de soutien pour ceux qui commencent à perdre la foi. Alors que certains ont trouvé le moyen de compartimenter et de cacher leurs émotions, beaucoup commencent à montrer leurs fêlures et ils ne savent pas que c’est bien. Lorsque vous entendez un plaidoyer résigné pour avoir une conversation «normale» en dehors de la foi pendant une période particulièrement difficile, il est difficile de ne pas se sentir frustré et navré que ces règles arbitraires ne le permettent pas.

Même si les barrières de communication n’étaient pas un problème, la Finlande serait toujours l’un des endroits les plus sceptiques pour tenter toute forme de prosélytisme. Une bonne interaction pour la plupart de ces missionnaires est de ne pas être activement crié par ceux que vous essayez d’atteindre – même si vous ne comprenez pas tous les mots, ce n’est pas amusant d’être confronté avec colère. Lorsqu’ils parviennent à franchir la barrière de la langue et le scepticisme, les sujets se retrouvent souvent à devoir justifier leurs propres croyances. L’une des meilleures scènes du film implique Megan et son compagnon assis avec une famille finlandaise qui commencent à l’interroger sur la façon dont la chronologie historique de la foi mormone s’aligne sur les croyances généralement acceptées sur le Christ. La réponse de Megan est le long de la ligne standard de la foi et de la croyance sans plus d’examen.

Cela va vers l’un des seuls vrais défauts du documentaire. Anderson met en place une structure de “voyage du héros” pour ces quatre là où ils quittent la maison pour cette grande aventure et rentrent chez eux différents de ce qu’ils sont partis. D’une manière ou d’une autre, cette dynamique se joue principalement à l’écran. Ces jeunes sont changés, si ce n’est de manière évidente comme la confiance en soi, alors de manière plus personnelle qu’on ne peut que nous dire. Pourtant, il ne semble jamais y avoir de lien solide entre leurs expériences en Finlande et les personnes que nous voyons après une expérience de deux ans à la fin du film. On nous dit que la plupart d’entre eux ont vécu des expériences qui ont changé leur vie et qui n’ont fait que renforcer leur foi, mais les exemples de cela ne sont que passés sous silence ou ne sont pas montrés du tout. Bien qu’il puisse être difficile de capturer le moment exact qui solidifie la foi de quelqu’un, le fait que les moments difficiles l’emportent si facilement sur les succès vous fait vous demander si certaines des images n’ont pas été capturées, ce qui aurait pu être prévu.

Ceci est une critique mineure pour ce qui est dans l’ensemble un documentaire vraiment enrichissant qui apporte un peu d’humanité et de personnalité à un groupe qui s’accompagne de beaucoup de sentiments passionnés. Le film ne défend pas cette religion, mais il nous rappelle que ce sont des personnes en trois dimensions derrière les vêtements professionnels. Il y a de la place pour explorer plus en profondeur la communauté LDS, mais la nature plus personnelle de ces histoires que nous obtenons ici est convaincante d’une manière différente. Vous seriez pardonné si vous voulez toujours éviter les missionnaires la prochaine fois qu’ils sont à votre porte d’entrée, mais rappelez-vous simplement qu’ils pourraient juste être un enfant de l’autre côté souhaitant pouvoir être à la maison en train de jouer avec son chien.

Beaucoup de gens se souviennent probablement d’un moment où ils ont trouvé un jeune vêtu d’une chemise et d’une cravate d’un blanc immaculé frappant à leur porte ou se promenant dans un espace public qu’ils traversaient. L’« uniforme » des missionnaires mormons lui-même évoque une réaction viscérale, selon les croyances de l’individu. Il est facile de porter un jugement sur l’Église de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours, leur héritage est bien documenté et mérite d’être examiné, mais que savons-nous de ce jeune qui n’a pratiquement aucune expérience du monde réel ? Pourquoi leur simple présence touche-t-elle si rapidement une corde sensible ?

Le nouveau documentaire La mission de la réalisatrice Tania Anderson offre un accès extérieur inégalé à un groupe de quatre jeunes missionnaires alors qu’ils se lancent dans leur premier voyage dans le monde réel pour convertir certaines des personnes les plus non religieuses d’Europe. Bien que le film ne sonde peut-être pas trop profondément la religion elle-même, le fait d’apprendre à connaître ces jeunes âmes offre une nouvelle perspective précieuse qui peut empêcher votre pouls de s’accélérer la prochaine fois que vous verrez un jeune bien habillé.

Le film commence par nous présenter brièvement les quatre jeunes fraîchement sortis du lycée qui s’apprêtent à se lancer dans une mission redoutable en Finlande : Kai, peu sûr de lui, parle penaud de son voyage devant un public ; Tyler semble fait sur mesure pour ce travail car il se vante de la façon dont il veut établir la référence en matière de conversion ; McKenna est la fanatique studieuse dont toute la famille n’est pas aussi dévouée à la foi qu’elle; et Megan est aussi proche d’un «enfant sauvage» que vous pourriez qualifier un mormon pratiquant alors qu’elle fait de longs trajets en écoutant de la musique rap. Tous les quatre habitent un archétype lâche qu’Anderson semble désireux de suivre tout en s’adaptant avec plaisir à tous les développements du monde réel provenant de ces jeunes adultes en évolution.

Le documentaire maintient un assez bon équilibre lorsqu’il s’agit de dépeindre l’église et l’impact qu’elle a sur ses fidèles. La façon dont on interprète ce qui est présenté ici dépendra en grande partie du point de vue qu’on a lorsqu’on aborde le sujet. Une rencontre que McKenna a avec sa famille et son chef d’église fournit un compte rendu de première main de l’intense concentration sur la famille qui est la pierre angulaire de la foi. Une mention désinvolte que cet homme plus âgé se mettra au travail pour organiser des rendez-vous pour elle une fois qu’elle reviendra de sa mission est déchirante, surtout plus nous apprenons à la connaître et à nous soucier d’elle. C’est une idée courante chez nos sujets et leurs compagnons : des jeunes qui ont hâte de se marier après avoir grandi avec tant de barrières qui les entourent.

L’église déploie des efforts décents pour préparer ces enfants à se rendre dans d’autres pays pour diffuser le message. Pourtant, en fin de compte, ce ne sont que des demi-mesures qui ne font que les préparer à tâtonner leur terrain tout en laissant ces jeunes effrayés à la dérive lorsque quelqu’un choisit réellement de s’engager avec eux. Cela conduit beaucoup de ces enfants à se sentir très isolés et abattus, ayant l’impression d’abandonner leur foi. Cela est aggravé par le fait que la communication avec leur famille est réduite au minimum et que les partenaires affectés à leur mission changent tous les deux mois au cours de ce voyage de deux ans. Le dévouement à leurs compagnons est censé les préparer au mariage, mais la réalité semble être un autre domaine d’instabilité dans un pays où vous vous sentez déjà incertain.

Lorsque le film se tourne vers les problèmes de santé mentale, il semble être la meilleure version de lui-même. Participer à votre mission est mythifié à un tel point qu’il va de soi que tout obstacle serait un coup brutal à votre estime de soi. Bien que la pression manifeste soit rarement montrée, la pression que chacun de ces enfants s’impose est claire comme le jour. Les réunions de groupe informelles qui éclatent parmi certains des missionnaires ressemblent presque à un groupe de soutien pour ceux qui commencent à perdre la foi. Alors que certains ont trouvé le moyen de compartimenter et de cacher leurs émotions, beaucoup commencent à montrer leurs fêlures et ils ne savent pas que c’est bien. Lorsque vous entendez un plaidoyer résigné pour avoir une conversation «normale» en dehors de la foi pendant une période particulièrement difficile, il est difficile de ne pas se sentir frustré et navré que ces règles arbitraires ne le permettent pas.

Même si les barrières de communication n’étaient pas un problème, la Finlande serait toujours l’un des endroits les plus sceptiques pour tenter toute forme de prosélytisme. Une bonne interaction pour la plupart de ces missionnaires est de ne pas être activement crié par ceux que vous essayez d’atteindre – même si vous ne comprenez pas tous les mots, ce n’est pas amusant d’être confronté avec colère. Lorsqu’ils parviennent à franchir la barrière de la langue et le scepticisme, les sujets se retrouvent souvent à devoir justifier leurs propres croyances. L’une des meilleures scènes du film implique Megan et son compagnon assis avec une famille finlandaise qui commencent à l’interroger sur la façon dont la chronologie historique de la foi mormone s’aligne sur les croyances généralement acceptées sur le Christ. La réponse de Megan est le long de la ligne standard de la foi et de la croyance sans plus d’examen.

Cela va vers l’un des seuls vrais défauts du documentaire. Anderson met en place une structure de “voyage du héros” pour ces quatre là où ils quittent la maison pour cette grande aventure et rentrent chez eux différents de ce qu’ils sont partis. D’une manière ou d’une autre, cette dynamique se joue principalement à l’écran. Ces jeunes sont changés, si ce n’est de manière évidente comme la confiance en soi, alors de manière plus personnelle qu’on ne peut que nous dire. Pourtant, il ne semble jamais y avoir de lien solide entre leurs expériences en Finlande et les personnes que nous voyons après une expérience de deux ans à la fin du film. On nous dit que la plupart d’entre eux ont vécu des expériences qui ont changé leur vie et qui n’ont fait que renforcer leur foi, mais les exemples de cela ne sont que passés sous silence ou ne sont pas montrés du tout. Bien qu’il puisse être difficile de capturer le moment exact qui solidifie la foi de quelqu’un, le fait que les moments difficiles l’emportent si facilement sur les succès vous fait vous demander si certaines des images n’ont pas été capturées, ce qui aurait pu être prévu.

Ceci est une critique mineure pour ce qui est dans l’ensemble un documentaire vraiment enrichissant qui apporte un peu d’humanité et de personnalité à un groupe qui s’accompagne de beaucoup de sentiments passionnés. Le film ne défend pas cette religion, mais il nous rappelle que ce sont des personnes en trois dimensions derrière les vêtements professionnels. Il y a de la place pour explorer plus en profondeur la communauté LDS, mais la nature plus personnelle de ces histoires que nous obtenons ici est convaincante d’une manière différente. Vous seriez pardonné si vous voulez toujours éviter les missionnaires la prochaine fois qu’ils sont à votre porte d’entrée, mais rappelez-vous simplement qu’ils pourraient juste être un enfant de l’autre côté souhaitant pouvoir être à la maison en train de jouer avec son chien.
