Si vous me connaissez depuis un petit moment, vous savez certainement que je suis une grande fan de Nick Cave. J’ai découvert son univers musical il y a plusieurs années maintenant grâce à un Best Of et surtout à Murder Ballads. A l’époque j’étais probablement trop jeune pour comprendre toutes les paroles mais j’étais quand même attirée par ces mélodies envoûtantes. Plus tard je suis encore plus tombée sous le charme de No More Shall We Part. Un album très mélancolique mais encore une fois magnifique à écouter.
Malheureusement j’ai raté plusieurs fois l’occasion de le voir en concert. Et j’avoue je regrette vraiment ses concerts solos où c’était juste lui et un piano. Quand ils ont sortit l’album Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! et annoncé leur date à Bruxelles, je me suis ruée sur les tickets. C’était fabuleux d’enfin voir Nick Cave et ses Bad Seeds après avoir écouté leurs albums pendant des années. Malheureusement le concert a été légèrement gâché par une salle plus du tout adaptée aux concerts et avec un son plutôt mauvais. Cette année Nick Cave n’est pas accompagné de ses Bad Seeds ou en solo, il tourne avec Grinderman. Son autre projet plus rock, plus blues, plus fort (oui c’est possible). Les paroles sont aussi bien plus explicites et ils ne s’en cachent pas. Leur nouveau single Heaten Child serait parfait dans une série comme “True Blood”, ça vous donne un peu l’ambiance de l’album Jusqu’à présent ils ont sorti deux albums et j’avoue que je ne connaissais pas trop le premier.
Le concert se déroulait à l’Ancienne Belgique de Bruxelles. Une des salles encore à taille humaine. Je suis arrivée vers 18h et j’ai été surprise du peu de monde présent. A 19h les portes se sont ouvertes et je me suis dépêchée pour entrer dans la salle et j’ai réussi à être au premier rang! Pour une fois l’horaire était bien respecté et à 19h30 Anna Calvi est montée sur scène. Bonne prestation mais pas fabuleuse non plus. Elle a commencé avec un solo de guitare qui m’a rendu presque sourde et m’a un peu inquiété pour le reste du concert. Je ne sais pas trop comment décrire sa musique. Elle est une très belle voix mais je trouve que celle-ci était beaucoup trop noyée par les autres instruments. Ils ont joué pour une petite heure et leurs dernières chansons m’ont plus plu.

If you’ve known me for a while you are probably aware that I am a big Nick Cave fan. Years ago I got a Best Of and Murder Ballads. I was probably a bit too young to understand all the lyrics but still I was really attracted by their music. Murder Ballads made me fall in love with Nick Cave’s musical universe. The lyrics are just so beautiful and the melodies haunting. Then I fell even harder for No More Shall We Part. Some will say it’s a depressing album but there is a sense of peace when you listen to it. It’s just beautiful.
Unfortunately I missed several occasions of seeing him in concert. I am especially sad that I missed his solo concerts when it was just him and a piano. But when they released Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! and they announced their Brussels date I jumped on the tickets. It was amazing to see him and The Bad Seeds for the very first time after all these years of playing the cds. Unfortunately the concert was kinda messed up because of the crappy venue. This year no Bad Seeds or solo concert but it’s with Grinderman that Nick Cave is touring. Grinderman is kind of his side project with some of the Bad Seeds members. It’s more rock/blues and definitely louder (yes that possible). The lyrics are much more explicit and they are not ashamed of it. Their new single Heathen Child would fit perfectly on a show like “True Blood”. So far they’ve only released two albums and I have to admit that I wasn’t too familiar with the first album.
Anyway the most fantastic thing is that the concert was taking place at The AB in Brussels. One of the very few intimate venue left. I got there at 6pm and was surprised to see very few people queuing before me. At 7pm when the door opened I went as quickly as I can inside and managed to be front row standing. For once they were following their schedule pretty tightly and at 7:30pm Anna Calvi started. Good but not great. She started with a guitar solo that almost left me deaf and worried me for the rest of the concert. I am not sure how to describe her music. Her voice is lovely but the drums really drowned it. They played for a little less than 1h and I have to say that the songs got better toward the end.
A 20h30 Nick Cave & co. sont arrivés sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements. Je ne connais plus la setlist mais à part pour un petit break, ils ont joué non stop! Au précédent concert Nick Cave avait tendance a chanter puis chercher dans ses partitions, et puis reprendre. Ici tout était à la fois plus pro et relax. L’énergie qu’ils dégagent sur scène est vraiment incroyable. Ils vivent leur musique et c’est clair qu’ils s’amusent comme des fous. Warren Ellis me surprendra toujours. Si vous le croisez la nuit, vous prendrez certainement la fuite. Il est terrifiant avec ses longs cheveux grisonnants et sa longue barbe. On dirait franchement un possédé, encore pire que Nick Cave, mais il est vraiment bourré de talent. J’ai adoré les voir se rentrer l’un dans l’autre pendant qu’ils jouaient tout deux de la guitare, ou Nick lui demandant s’il pouvait avoir quelques uns de ses antidouleurs.
Le son m’a aussi surpris surtout après la prestation d’Anna Calvi. Alors félicitation à l’ingénieur du son et à l’AB. La voix de Nick était aussi parfaite.
Détail amusant la batterie est rose ainsi que leurs essuis!
Nick Cave n’a pas ménagé ses efforts non plus pour être proche de son public. Il a sauté régulièrement à l’avant de la scène pour aller d’un côté à l’autre de la scène. Le voir si près de vous éructer des chansons reste quand même une expérience incroyable que je n’aurais jamais cru voir. Kitchenette est la chanson qui m’a certainement le plus marqué. Elle est juste diaboliquement géniale. Je n’ai pas trouvé encore de vidéo de Bruxelles mais voici un aperçu de Londres (son pas terrible).

At 8:30pm Nick Cave & co. arrived on stage under a storm of applauses. I can’t tell you the exact setlist but except for short break, they played non stop! At the previous concert he was fumbling with his music sheets and taking time between songs. Here it was much more pro and relaxed at the same time. The energy being put in their performance is simply amazing, they truly live their music and you can see they are having a ball doing it. Warren Ellis never ceases to amaze me. You’d see him at night you’d run for your life. LOL He looks like a madman with this long greying hair and huge beard. He is like he is possessed on stage, even more than Nick Cave. But my God he is so talented. I loved seeing Nick playfull kick him, or ask him if he (then we) could have some of his painkillers.
I was surprised by how good the sound was especially after Anna Calvi. So kudos to their sound system and The AB. Nick’s voice was also in top form.
Random but I was highly amused that the drums set was baby pink as well as their towels! LOL
Nick Cave didn’t play it safe either. He often came forward and jumped on the fence to be closer to the audience and of course dragging the poor mic stand in his frantic run. I don’t know how many times the tech guys had to come on stage to untangle it. Having him belt and scream his lyrics less than a meter to you his quite the experience. I never thought I’d see that to be honest! One of the song that stood out the most for me was Kitchenette. Mischievious, insane and genius live. I don’t have any video yet but here is a recent one from London (not the best sound though).
Lorsque le groupe a entamé les premières notes de No Pussy Blues, Nick est à nouveau revenu à l’avant de la scène et a décidé de s’installer une jambe sur scène, une jambe sur la barre juste devant moi! Il a commencé à chanter:
My face is finished, my body’s gone.
Et puis je ne sais pas comment cela c’est passé (trop d’émotions) il m’a pris la main et a continué:
And I can’t help but think standin’ up here in all this applause and gazin’ down at all the young and the beautiful.
Pour continuer en me fixant ce qui je vous jure est à la fois fabuleux et terrifiant!

Un très beau moment pour moi en tant que fan!
Même s’ils ont peu parlé entre les chansons j’ai trouvé qu’ils étaient quand même proche de leur public. Il a notamment dédié une chanson à une fille qui fabrique: “bags and shit!” Ses mots pas les miens. Il a mentionné avoir reçu un oreiller? Quand il a eu fini, il a pointé vers la fille en lui précisant bien que la chanson suivante était pour le reste du public et plus pour elle. Ils ont pris une courte pause avant d’entamer la seconde partie, pour finir en apothéose avec Grinderman.
Merci à Grinderman de montrer qu’à l’heure des Star Academy & co. il y a encore des groupes qui font du bruit et n’ont pas peur de sortir de l’ordinaire.

Then he grabbed my hand, not sure how it happened btw (too much emotions) and went:

And continued singing this directly to me which was both amazing and absolutely terrifying.

As if you couldn’t tell yet, it totally made my night.
Even if they didn’t talk too much during songs they interacted well with the audience too. They dedicated a song to to a girl who makes: “bags and shit!” His words not mine. He said he once got a pillow from her. So funny. When he was done he pointed to the girl and said that the next song was not for her but for the rest of the audience. He took some requests too which I think he didn’t really do with The Bad Seeds before. After a brief pause they came back for an encore which was more like a second part and ended with Grinderman.
Thank you Grinderman for showing us that in an era of American Idol & co. there are still bands that make noise and are not afraid to be different.
