Au Nouveau Mexique, Francisco Camacho a interrogé les habitants de Truth or Consequences pour connaître les raisons qui les ont motivées à changer le nom de la ville dans les années 1950 ; dans Group Marriage (2009-present), un projet initié dans le cadre du festival Spinoza à Amsterdam, il porte au parlement néerlandais une pétition afin d'autoriser l'union entre plusieurs citoyens, le mariage de groupe. Plus récemment, Camacho a présenté Entkustung de l'art au Casino du Luxembourg, résultat d'une collaboration entre L'Ecole de l'Armée du Luxembourg, des politiciens dont le ministre de la culture et un groupe de hip hop.

L'artiste cherche les moyens d'infiltrer son travail dans les structures officielles de la société. Ses projets se construisent au sein d'un contexte identifié et en collaboration avec différentes personnes : habitants, avocats et politiciens. Ainsi, sa pratique quitte le domaine artistique pour se rendre visible dans d'autres champs sous forme d'activisme politique ou d'action social. Son travail participe à l'idée que l'art pourrait avoir des conséquences pratiques sur notre milieu socioculturel et cherche à redéfinir des concepts communs pour amener l'art à changer la manière dont on conçoit notre société.
Francisco Camacho est né en 1979 à Bogota, Colombie. Il travaille actuellement sur un projet avec le Van Abbe Museum dans le quartier de Wensel West (Eindhoven). En avril et mai 2011, Francisco Camacho sera en résidence à Mains d'Oeuvres, Saint-Ouen.

Kadist Art Foundation est une fondation privée créée en 2001 ; elle a pour vocation de contribuer à promouvoir l'art contemporain à travers la constitution d'une collection et l'organisation d'expositions et de résidences dans son espace à Paris. Kadist souhaite participer activement à la diffusion et aux échanges internationaux de l'art contemporain. Par ces différents programmes, Kadist exprime son engagement auprès d'artistes qui définissent par là même son identité artistique.

Ce séminaire s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une discussion entre le projet The Public School mené par Bétonsalon depuis septembre 2009 et un projet mené par la Fondation Kadist, qui réunit les branches philanthropique et artistique de la fondation sous forme de collaboration et de production. Conçu comme une série d'interventions sur une année, ce séminaire portera sur des pratiques artistiques qui se développent en relation étroite avec un contexte et/ou une communauté ; d'interroger ce que l'on qualifie de 'pratiques sociales' dans le champ de l'art. Ce sont autant d'expériences dans lesquelles le rôle de l'artiste, du commissaire, du centre d'art, sont remis en cause au delà de l'exposition, et où l'artiste est amené à travailler de manière collaborative, processuelle et discursive en empruntant parfois ses méthodologies à différentes disciplines.
On préfère ici le terme 'geste' à celui d'action', car ces pratiques sont bien souvent modestes et locales, elles ne prétendent pas changer les choses mais visent à s'inscrire justement dans la complexité d'une société en prenant en compte des subjectivités, en soulevant des questions politiques, c'est à dire en « révélant la présence, derrière une situation donnée, de forces qui étaient jusque là cachées » (Bruno Latour, Changer de société, refaire de la sociologie).

In New Mexico, Francisco Camacho investigated the reasons why the inhabitants of a village decided to change its name Truth or Consequences in the 50's ; with Group Marriage, an on-going project as part of the Amsterdam Spinoza Manifestation (2009), he petitions the Dutch parliament to open civil marriage to groups of citizens who would marry each other. And more recently Entkustung de l'art, presented at the Casino of Luxembourg, was part of a collaboration with the Luxembourg Military School, local politicians from the Senate and the Minister of Culture and a hip hop band. > > Artist Francisco Camacho seeks ways in which his work can exist within official social channels. His projects have been the result of long investigations and collaborations with the local context, inhabitants and lawyers to allow his discourse to be examined by other structures of society. Therefore, his projects often leave the art world to become significant in another fields and can be viewed as a form of political activism or social discourse. His practice evolves around the possibility of art to bear practical effects on the cultural background and reflects on re-defining common concepts that can lead art to change the way in which we conceive society.
Francisco Camacho was born in 1979 in Bogota, Colombia.
He is currently working on a 'community based project' for the Van Abbe Museum in the neighborhood of Woensel West (Eindhoven).
From April to May 2011, Francisco Camacho will be in residency at Mains d'Oeuvres, Saint-Ouen.

This seminar is the result of a discussion between The Public School, which opened at Bétonsalon in September 2009 and a project initiated by the Kadist Art Foundation's philanthropic and artistic branches bringing together an artist and an NGO. Conceived as a series of interventions programmed over one year, this seminar focuses on artistic practices developed in a close relationship with a context, a community and question what we call « social practice » in the field of art.
The seminar will present experiences, which keep questioning the role of the artist, curator or art centre outside of mere exhibition making, when artists work in a collaborative, process-oriented and discursive approach, sometimes borrowing its methodologies from other disciplines.
We would rather use the term 'gesture' than 'action' since these projects are often modest and very local ; they address the complexity of a society taking into account subjectivities and raising political questions, meaning « revealing the presence, behind a given situation, of forces that were hidden until then » (Bruno Latour, Changer de société, refaire de la sociologie).
