What’s happening in Italy? Le duo de Dj Hunter / Game a la réponse! Depuis deux ans, les deux italiens poursuivent l’électro dans ses moindres profondeurs. Des mélodies sombres sont mélangées à la House avec une pointe de Techno que chaque univers des deux Dj apporte. En 2011, ils sortent un premier EP Touch me sous le label allemand Diynamic, puis en 2012, ils remettent ça avec Reckless Lady. Leur prochain album est prévu pour 2014. Comme bien d’autres duos de Dj, la rencontre s’est faite dans un club, mais pour eux, l’histoire a vraiment commencé sur internet…
Comment a débuté l’aventure Hunter / Game ?
Emmanuel : Le projet Hunter / Game a commencé quand je vivais à New York et Martino à Milan. On a commencé à produire à distance. Les logiciels peuvent te donner un espace pour travailler entre deux parties différentes du monde, on a donc produit de la musique ensemble en s’envoyant nos projets en tant qu’amis et puis on a découvert au fur et à mesure notre propre touche qui en émergeait. Quand je lui envoyais ma prod, il la changeait avec des samples qui pouvaient m’intéresser, et inversement pour moi.
Quel genre de touche en a émergé ?
Emmanuel : Nous avons beaucoup d’influences diverses. Par exemple, je viens de la période House de la fin des années 80 et des années 90, tandis que Martino – qui est plus jeune que moi – vient d’un milieu beaucoup plus Techno et Minimale. Nous mélangeons nos différences pour les mettre ensemble. Parfois nous réalisons une prod avec plus de Techno, parfois avec plus une touche de House. Nos productions sont si particulières car c’est un style différent qui en émerge au final. Maintenant, nos influences proviennent plus de la musique Indie comme Boards of Canada ou Flying Lotus.
Qu’en est-il de la musique House dans vos influences ?
Emmanuel : La période House était étrange. Quand j’y repense, toute la période House était pleine de choses folles et passionnantes. Il y avait autant de sons venant de Chicago que de la French Touch, c’était vraiment excitant de vivre ça. Mais tu ne peux pas prendre ça en tant qu’influences, tu dois juste prendre ce mouvement comme une expérience, dans le sens où tu commences avec ce type de son et puis tu avances vers des sons avec plus de technologies musicales et de logiciels. Le changement de production a complètement modifié la donne. La House de Chicago était faite de choses analogiques, maintenant tu as juste un logiciel d’ordinateur.
Vous venez tous les deux d’Italie, quelles différences voyez-vous entre la scène électro italienne et la française ?
Emmanuel : C’est complètement différent. Je ne sais pas pourquoi… En France, il y a eu c’est énorme engouement pour la scène électro avec la French Touch.
Certains Dj italiens disent qu’il n’y a pas de scène électro en Italie…
Martino : Nan ! Ce n’est pas vrai nous avons beaucoup d’artistes, anciens et aussi nouveaux sur la scène électro.
Emmanuel : La scène italienne vient d’un milieu Deep House comme The Bloody Beetroots ou Crookers. Mais nous ne suivons pas cette mouvance. En fait, l’électro est plus quelque chose de français.
Qu’en est-il de la scène électro new yorkaise ?
Emmanuel : Si tu parles d’électro au sens large, New York est génial pour ça ! On y a été avec des amis et on s’est rendu compte que cette ville est remplie d’artistes. Tu peux marcher dans Manhattan puis à Brooklyn et rencontrer des artistes partout. C’est tellement inspirant ! Tu ne t’arrêtes jamais de rencontrer des personnes et parler de musique ! Si quelqu’un travaille sur quelque chose, il peut rentrer en contact facilement avec toi, c’est tout un état d’esprit d’expression.
Quand savez-vous qu’un track est fini ?
Martino : A vrai dire, on ne sait pas ! Quand les gens partent ! (Rires)
Emmanuel : Et quand on change de track ! (Rire)
Parlons mode, comment décririez-vous votre style ?
Emmanuel : Nos vibrations sont plongées dans de profondes mélodies et d’âmes sombres, donc notre style rejette vraiment des signes noirs. D’habitude, on est habillé en noir. (Au moment de l’interview Emmanuel porte un jeans de couleur brut avec un T-shirt noir, Martino, un pantalon beige et un pull gris, NDLR) ça représente vraiment notre humeur, c’est aussi notre touche personnelle dans notre musique. C’est un style très introverti qu’on retrouve dans nos prod et notre façon de se vêtir. Dans la mode, on exprime toujours son état d’esprit.
Martino : Tu oublies de dire que ton premier travaille était de produire des défilés de mode en Italie.

Emmanuel : Oui, mon premier travail était de produire des défilés et j’ai encore mon agence, parfois on se produit pour des défilés comme French Connection.
La Deep est souvent associée à la mode…
Martino : Le monde de l’électronique est très ouvert…
Emmanuel : L’électronique est fait de leaders d’opinions comme le monde de la mode, donc c’est aussi cool d’écouter telle musique que de porter tel vêtement.
Martino : Souvent les gens qui travaillent dans l’industrie de la musique ont aussi un pied dans la mode. A Milan, beaucoup de gens font ça.
Quand vous produisez un track, pensez-vous que la mode a une influence sur vous ?
Martino : Nan, on essaye de sentir nos vibrations…
Qu’est-ce qui vous donne des vibrations ?
Emmanuel : les autres musiques. Tout ce qui vient du Rock des années 80.
Martino : En ce moment, on est plus Pop musique de la scène anglaise comme James Black, mais les sentiments jouent un rôle prépondérant dans notre musique…
Emmanuel : … les femmes surtout !
Quel est votre jeans de référence ?
Emmanuel : Mon icone jean vient carrément des années 90 ! Après, il y a eu cette tendance du skinny provenant de Cheap Monday et tout le monde en portait ! Pour moi c’était mission impossible, trop skinny, je n’arrivais pas à rentrer dedans. Maintenant, je porte des jeans Marc Jacobs, ils sont stretch et trop confortables ! Je ne pense pas pouvoir en porter d’autres. J’aime bien les jeans Evisu aussi…
C’est qui votre icone jeans ?
Emmanuel : Johnny Deep, carrément !
Martino (Rires) : Nan !
Que devrait porter une femme pour être sexy avec un jeans ?
Emmanuel : Les jeans sont vraiment usés donc ils ne sont plus si sexy que ça ! Cette espèce de retour des années 80 n’est pas sexy ! Pour être sexy, une femme ne doit pas porter de jeans, elle doit juste être nue sur mon sofa. C’est la manière d’être la plus sexy !
C’était quoi le premier vinyle que vous avez acheté ?
Martino : Minilogue, un de mes groupes favoris.
Emmanuel : Mon premier vinyle était de Todd Terry, Strictly Rhythm.
Si votre ordinateur était sur le point de se planter et que vous ne pourriez sauver que quelques tracks, lesquels seraient-ils ?
Martino : On sauverait notre prochain album ! On travaille dessus depuis longtemps.
Emmanuel : J’en ai sauvegardé trois copies chez moi et il en a aussi trois autres copie. Plus une autre à la banque !
La banque ?
Emmanuel : Oui, on est un peu maniaque avec ça ! On pète un disque dur chaque mois à peu près !
Si votre style vestimentaire était une chanson, ce serait laquelle ?
Martino : Une de l’album de Trentemoller ! Ou pour être encore plus romantique Miss you.
Emmanuel : Pour moi, Nirvana.

Martino : Être Dj et producteur.
Emmanuel : Je dois vraiment penser à ça… la musique… hum nan… J’aimerais dire quelque chose de très sale, mais je vais me retenir ! … Peut-être un double cheeseburger avec sauce barbecue et grandes frites !

What’s happening in Italy? The Italian Dj duo Hunter / Game has the answer! Since two years, these two guys have been pursuing electronic music reaching its greatest depths. Dark melodies are mixed with House, adding a touch of Techno coming from the background of both Djs: Martino and Emmanuel. They launched two EPs with the German record label Diynamic called Touch me and Reckless lady in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Their next step: an album in 2014. Many other duo Djs, started their history together in a nightclub, but for them, it actually started through the Internet…
How did the Hunter / Game adventure start?
Emmanuel: The project started when I was living in New York and Martino was living in Milan. We started to make productions through distance. The technology today can give you enough space to work in two different parts of the world. As a result we started making music together by first sending our projects to each other as friends and then we went on discovering our emerging common style. When I sent my projects to Martino, he changed them adding samples that could be interesting to me and vice versa.
What kind of style was emerging from your productions?
Emmanuel: We are influenced by several genres. For instance, I come from the late 80’s and 90’s House period. Martino is younger than me; so he is more under the Techno and Minimal influence. We mix up the different genres and put it all together. Sometimes we make our productions more Techno-like, sometimes we add more of House. Our productions are particular because a different kind of style emerges in the end. Today we are mainly influenced by Indie music like Boards of Canada or Flying Lotus.
What about House music as an influence to your music?
Emmanuel: The era of House music was a strange period. Whenever I think back, the whole House period was crazy! There were loads of sounds coming from Chicago as well as from the French Touch House so it was very exciting to live it! But you cannot take all of it as an influence, but rather the whole movement as an experiment in the sense that you start with it in the background and then you add other sounds using musical technologies and the appropriate software.
You both come from Italy, what differences do you see between the Italian and the French electro music?
Emmanuel: They are totally different. I don’t know… because in France you have a huge electro scene with the French Touch.
Some Italian Djs say that in Italy there is no electro scene…
Martino: No! That is not true because we have a lot of artists, both old school guys and also new guys in the electro scene.
Emmanuel: The Italian electro scene has a Deep House and Techno background like The Bloody Beetroots or Crookers; but we don’t follow these kinds of waves as electro is rather a French thing.
What about the New York Electro scene?
Emmanuel: If you are talking about Electro in a large sense, then New York is a great city for that! We were there with some friends and it is full with artists. You can walk in Manhattan and then go to Brooklyn and you will see artists everywhere. It is so inspiring! You never stop meeting people and getting into music with them! If someone is working on something, then he can easily get in touch with you; they all live under a state of mind that is driven by expression.
When do you know that a track is finished?
Martino: Actually, we do not know! When people leave! (Laughs)
Emmanuel: And when the track is being changed! (Laughs)
Talking about fashion, how would you describe your style?
Emmanuel: Our vibes are immersed in deep melodies and in dark souls so our style also reflects this attitude. We usually dress in black. (At the time of the interview, Emmanuel was wearing a pair of blue jeans with a black T-shirt and Martino was wearing a pair of beige pants with a grey sweatshirt, Ed) This truly represents our mood and is key for giving a personal touch to our music. It’s a really introverted style found in our music and in our way of dressing. It’s our mood that we express through fashion.
Martino: You forgot to say that your first job was to produce fashion shows in Italy.

Emmanuel: Yeah, my first job was to produce fashion shows and I still have my agency. Sometimes we play in fashion shows like for instance for French Connection.
Deep House is often associated with fashion…
Martino: The world of electronic music is super open-minded…
Emmanuel: The world of electronic music is made up by opinion leaders similarly as the fashion world; so it is cool to listen to cool music as it is hip to wear trendy clothes.
Martino: Often, people that work in the music industry work in fashion too. In Milan, a lot of people are doing that.
Does Fashion influence you while producing a track?
Martino: No, not at all. We feel our vibes but that’s it.
What gives you your vibes?
Emmanuel: Music from other Artists; especially rock music from the 80’s.
Martino: Currently, we really like Pop music from the UK like James Blake. Feelings form a big part in our music…
Emmanuel: … in particular girls!
Who is your role model when it comes to jeans?
Emmanuel: I am really influenced by the 90’s. After that there was the skinny trend from Cheap Monday that everybody was following. For me it was a mission impossible to fit in those skinny jeans. I couldn’t stand straight anymore. Now I am wearing Marc Jacobs jeans, it has a perfect stretch and soooo f**** comfortable. I think I won’t ever wear another brand. But I also wear Evisu jeans…
But who is your role model when it comes to jeans?
Emmanuel: Absolutely Johnny Deep!
Martino (laughs): No!!
What should a woman wear to be sexy in jeans?
Emmanuel: Nowadays my image of jeans is rather wasted than sexy. Trying to get the 80’s back is not sexy at all. To be sexy, a woman doesn’t have to wear jeans. She just needs to be naked on my sofa. This is the best way to be sexy.
Do you remember the first vinyl that you ever bought?
Martino: Mine was from Minilogue wich is one of my favorite bands.
Emmanuel: My first vinyl was Todd Terry’s Strictly Rhythm.
If your computer was about to crash and you could save a few tracks, which ones would they be?
Martino: We have to save our next album! We have been working on it for such a long time.
Emmanuel: I already saved three copies of it and he saved three as well. On top of it, we keep another one in a bank!
A bank?
Emmanuel: Yes, we are a bit maniac with this! We break one hard disk every month!
Martino: Sometimes we even loose our project! But there are some important projects that we keep at home and nobody is allowed to touch it!
Emmanuel: Yeah we have something like six copies; we are a bit afraid of losing them!
If your clothing style would be a song, which one would it be?
Martino: Definitely a track from Trentemoller’s album! Or to be romantic Miss you.
Emmanuel: I would go for Nirvana.
What’s hot (exciting) in your life?
Martino: My life as a DJ and producer.
Emmanuel: I have to think about that… maybe music…hum no… I would love to say something very dirty but I won’t… Maybe a double cheeseburger with barbecue sauce and French Fries!
