Kawaïsignfie en japonais « mignon ». La figure archétypale kawaï a pour nom Hello Kitty, cette petite chatte qui n’a pas de bouche car elle parle avec son cœur, dixit le slogan de la compagnie Sanyo, créatrice du personnage. Les personnages de Happy Tree Friends, eux ont un cœur en guise de nez mais de leur bouche bien vite jaillit un torrent de sang et de viscères. Derrière l’art de la surface kawaï se cache la profondeur des entrailles, l’intériorité des organes, la substance blanche ou grise de l’âme. En un clin d’œil, derrière les fleurs transparaît l’écartèlement des chairs. Les paysages toujours champêtres et bucoliques sont repeints à l’hémoglobine. Poetics of horror in Happy Tree Friends

Kawaii means "cute" in Japanese. The archetypal kawaiirepresentative is called Hello Kitty, this small female cat which doesn't have a mouth for she speaks from her heart, according to the slogan of Sanyo, the company whichcreated the character. On the contrary, the characters of Happy Tree Friends have a heart-shaped nose, but from their mouth quickly spurts a torrent of blood and viscera. The art of the kawaii surface hides the depth of the bowels, the interiority of the organs, and the white or gray substance of the soul. In the blink of an eye, the quartering of flesh reveals from behind the flowers. The ever pastoral and bucolic landscapes get splattered with hemoglobin.
