Interview : I’m a soulful-pop artist, P.J. Morton

PJ MORTON "Je suis un artiste soul-pop" !

Outre ses talents de multi-instrumentiste, sa belle voix et son parcours atypique, le chanteur originaire de la Nouvelle-Orléans PJ Morton est sans doute la sensation soul de cette année 2013! Choriste, pianiste du groupe Maroon 5, auteur-compositeur et interprète, il est à lui seul une véritable machine destinée à gagner haut la main le statut tant convoité de "la relève de la soul". Signé sur le label de Lil’Wayne, Young Money plutôt connu pour ses artistes ultra bling-bling, c’est avec discrétion que Morton Junior embrase sa carrière en se présentant comme un artiste "soul-pop". Son premier album "New Orleans" (avec les présences de Stevie Wonder, Busta Rhymes ou Adam Levine) sort cette semaine en France et lors de son passage à paris mardi dernier, nous l’avons rencontré, l’occasion pour nous de vous le présenter avec classe!

#DM : Hi PJ, welcome to Paris we know it’s not your first time here but how is it going? Bonjour P.J. bienvenu à Paris, ce n’est pas la première fois que tu viens ici, comment ça se passe?

#PJ. : You’re right, this is not my first time in Paris, I’ve been around with Maroon 5 a lot and now, even solo this is my 3^rd time and I love it, it’s great! En effet, ce n’est pas ma 1ère fois, je suis déjà venu avec mon groupe Maroon 5. Et c’est ma 3ème fois ici en tant qu’artiste solo, j’adore Paris, c’est génial!

How do people call you? What is the PJ for? Comment les gens t’appellent? Que veut dire PJ?

It means Paul Junior, my father is Paul Senior and I have a little boy that we call P3 (laughs). PJ c’est pour Paul Junior, mon père est le Paul Senior, quant à mon fils on le surnomme P3.

We know you used to play keyboard for Maroon 5 (This Love ou Moves like Jagger) but we would like to know more on how you got into the music industry. Tu es connu pour être le clavier de Maroon 5 mais comment es-tu arrivé dans la musique?

Well my father is a pastor (NDLR : Bishop Morton) so in church is really how I got started. I was playing keyboard in church, singing. I started writing for a lot of gospel artists that’s how I got into the song writing and production and then it just grew from there. I met India Arie, left New Orleans moved to Atlanta then I wroted on her album, won a grammy for that album and then you know, the rest just kept going on and on. Comme mon père était pasteur, je dirais que j’ai fait mes débuts à l’église. Je jouais aux claviers et je chantais. Par la suite j’ai écrit pas mal pour des artistes gospel, c’est comme ça que j’ai commencé l’écriture et la production. J’ai par la suite rencontré India Arie, puis quitté la Nouvelle-Orléans pour Atlanta. J’ai composé quelques titres pour son album, elle a d’ailleurs remporté un grammy pour ce dernier et la suite vous la connaissez…

And how did you got into the solo career? Et comment as-tu démarré en solo?

I was playing for Erykah Badu (keyboard, guitar & singing) and I did that for about a year and a half, once I finished that tour I kinda wanted to get into my own thing and have my own voice, build independently. Here we are now, I released 3 independent albums, signed with Young Money, my first major contract. A l’époque, je jouais pour Erykah Badu, cela a duré un an et demi. Une fois la tournée terminée, j’avais vraiment envie de me retrouver, de faire mes trucs, de me construire, d’être indépendant. Après 3 albums en indé, j’ai signé chez Young Money, mon premier gros contrat et nous voici…

How did you managed to get on Young Money Cash Money Billionaire? Comment as-tu décroché un contrat chez Young Money?

Well there’s a little history, Mack Maine who is the president of Young Money, we went to high school together in New Orleans. We talked about it and it made sense and they didn’t wanted to change anything about my music. Il y a une petite histoire derrière tout ça, Mack Maine le président de Young Money et moi sommes allés au lycée ensemble. Nous en avons parlé et cela semblait évident, ils ne voulaient rien changer à ma musique.

Really? Like they don’t touch creativity? Vraiment, ils laissent libre court à la créativité?

They don’t touch creativy at all, they just let you do what you do and support. Ils n’y touchent pas, ils te laisse faire ton art et te soutiennent.

YMCMB is mostly known for producing rap music… are you their first soul singer? Ce label est surtout connu pour produire des artistes hip-hop (NDLR : Lil’Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj, etc.)… es-tu leur premier artiste soul?

Definitely the first soulful pop singer at the label. They was nothing like that you know. I knew it was a big responsibility but I welcomed the challenge cause I felt like I’ve been doing it for a while independently and needed a machine to be behind me. Je suis le premier artiste soul-pop en effet, il n’y avait rien de cela avant. Je savais que ce serait une énorme responsabilité, mais j’accepte le challenge haut la main car j’en ai fait du chemin en indé et là j’ai besoin du soutien d’un major.

So who’s your boss? Alors c’est qui ton boss?

(laughs) Wayne is the boss, Baby is the boss, Mack is the boss! But they cool bosses you know, no pressure at all, it’s just support and love from those guys. Ils sont tous les trois les boss : Lil’Wayne, Birdman et Mack. Ils sont vraiment cool, pas de pression de leur part.

So you produce, sing, and write. How does it works? Donc si je comprends bien, tu produis, composes et chantes, comment ça se passe?

Yes Mme! Well it usually starts with me at the piano I have a melody, then make up some words then it becomes real words… Then I put some beats to it… Oui madame. Je démarre en général au piano, une mélodie me vient, puis quelques mots, qui deviennent à leur tour de vrais mots…puis j’ajoute quelques battements.

Just like that? Like a genius (laughs)? Juste comme ça, mais serais-tu un génie?

I won’t call myself a genius. I do alright it is something that is come naturally to me for a longtime so…I just do my thing. Je n’utiliserai pas le mot génie, je me débrouille c’est vrai car je fais cela depuis très longtemps. Disons juste que je fais mon truc…

So you’ve released your first major album ‘New Orleans’ congratulations by the way, what is your album about? Love? Peace? War? Poverty? Politics? Donc ton premier véritable album "New Orleans" est sortit le mois dernier (félicitations au passage) mais il parle de quoi au juste? L’amour, la paix, la guerre, la pauvreté, la politique (rires)?

Thank you very much. It’s probably mainly love. I love talking about love, it’s just something that I love, something that my mentors talk about, you know the way Stevie Wonder talked about it. It’s just life in general you know, going thru rough times, the journey of life. Merci beaucoup. Je dirais principalement d’amour, j’aime parler d’amour, c’est quelque chose qui me tient à coeur de la même manière comme pour Stevie Wonder (NDLR : une de ses inspirations). Je parle de la vie dans sa globalité, les épreuves de la vie.

What is the next single? Quel est le prochain titre?

The next one would be “Work it Out” and we got a remix coming to that as well. I’m really excited about this song cause that’s one of my favorites in the album. Le prochain sera "Work it out" il y aura aussi un remix. C’est une de mes chansons préférées de l’album.

Really? Well I was about to ask you what was your favorite song even though I know it’s so cliché ! (laughs) Justement, je m’appretais à te poser cette question!

(Laughs) I’m proud of all of them you know, they’re my kids. I hate to be cliché but they really are, I wrote and produced them I better be proud of them (laughs). They all are different things to me I can’t just choose one like that but since you’re insisting I would say “Only One” with Stevie Wonder. Je les aime toutes, je suis fier de toutes mes chansons, ce sont mes gosses! Je n’aime pas devoir choisir car chacune a sa petite histoire mais comme tu insistes je dirais "Only One" featuring Stevie Wonder.

What is the next level? Any concerts in Paris? Quelle est la prochaine étape, des concerts à Paris bientôt?

Well I’ll be in Paris (Bercy) with Maroon 5 in January 2014. I’ll be doing the opening, then Robin Thicke is in the middle then I play with Maroon 5 in the band as well. Double duty you know! But we’re doing fine with the band. Je serais à Paris en Janvier 2014 avec mon groupe Maroon 5. Je ferai l’avant première de Bercy, Robin Thicke sera de l’affiche puis je retourne sur scène avec le groupe, je jongle entre les deux mais bon, tout se passe bien.

Is it hard being a soul singer nowadays? Meaning the young generation is more into superficiality, alcool, drugs, video vixen, party hard, booty, etc. How do you bring them back to the basics…? De nos jours, est-ce que c’est dur d’être un chanteur de soul? La nouvelle génération est plutôt attirée par tout ce qui est superficiel, comment les attirer vers la source?

I think it’s always been like this, sex is always sold. I think it’s just important to know my role and try to do it the best that I can. I feel like I’m a soulful-pop singer you know, who is just doing his thing. I may not have the big booty girls in my videos but that’s not really what I’m pushing, there’s enough of that. I’m just sitting in my lane and try to push what I push and whoever I make the music for is who I make the music for. I wanna get it to them and get their support, that’s what I want : my audience. I don’t want what does not belong to me. Je pense que cela a toujours existé, le sexe fait vendre. C’est important pour moi de définir mon rôle et l’accomplir comme il se doit. Je suis un artiste soul-pop qui fait son truc. Je n’ai peut-être pas les filles les plus bonnes dans mes vidéos mais ce n’est pas ce que j’encourage, je laisse cela aux autres. Je suis dans ma lignée je fais de la musique pour les gens que cela touche, je veux les amener à aimer ma musique, la soutenir voilà pour mon public.

Who is the greatest artist of all time to you? Qui est selon toi le plus grand artiste de tous les temps?

If I had to pick just one it probably be Stevie! I think he’s the king he’s everybody’s influence even outside the soul family. He made soul, pop music and got it outside the box reaching a great audience and that’s what I wanna do! Si je devais n’en choisir qu’un ce serait Stevie Wonder, pour moi c’est le meilleur. Il a influencé tant d’artiste même en dehors du cercle de la musique soul. Il a rendu la soul music populaire et c’est ce que je veux faire.

Let’s talk about love, are you in love P.J.? Parlons un peu d’amour, es-tu amoureux?

Oh yes I am, I’ve been married to my wife Courtney for 4 years now and we’re going strong, marriage is a beautiful thing. Oh oui absolument, je suis marié depuis 4 ans à ma femme Courtney, le mariage est une merveilleuse chose.
