02 – New York Summer 2014 – See It All Tour

Grâce au merveilleux décalage horaire, j’étais déjà réveillée à 5h le deuxième jour! Ce qui n’était pas plus mal vu que j’avais une journée bien chargée. J’avais réservé le New York See It All Tour de la compagnie On Board Tours. Il s’agit d’un tour de la ville d’environ 5h-6h. Le tour se fait en mini van avec air conditionné (un must en été) et permet d’avoir déjà un bel aperçu de la ville et où tout se situe. Nous étions une vingtaine de touristes (pour la plupart américain) et le guide est un natif de NY ce qui est toujours un plus. Il faut savoir bien suivre car il y a pas mal d’arrêt, de marche,… mais j’ai vraiment adoré. NY est une ville très facile à visiter seule mais je trouve quand même plus chouette d’avoir quelques explications sur ce que l’on visite. Et puis c’est beaucoup plus reposant de se laisser guider!

Thanks to this wonderful thing called jet lag, I was up at 5am on the second day! I had a very full day ahead of me. I’d booked the New York See It All Tour from On Board Tours. It’s basically a 5h-6h tour of the city. It is done with a mini van with AC (a must this time of the year) and it allows you to have a good general overview of the city and where everything is. We were about 20-30 tourists (mostly Americans) and the guide was a New Yorker which I think was a great touch. You have to follow though because there is a lot of walking in between stops but I loved it. NY is easy to visit on your own but it’s much better to have some explanation about what you are seeing. And it’s nice to be guided once in a while!

Le lieu de rendez-vous se situait près du Ed Sullivan Theatre où est enregistré le Late Show with David Letterman. Au retour je suis repassée devant et tombée nez à nez avec Hank Hazaria! We were meeting near the Ed Sullivan Theatre where the Late Show with David Letterman is taped. On the way back I bumped into Hank Hazaria!

Le tour inclut aussi le ferry de Manhattan à Staten Island ce qui permet de voir la Statue de la Liberté.

The tour also includes the ferry to Staten Island so you can see the Statue of Liberty.

Financial District – Wall Street

Nous sommes notamment passé au mémorial du 11 septembre où je pense que je ne me serais pas arrêtée si j’avais été seule. Le guide travaillait juste à côté d’une des tours et son récit de ce jour là était vraiment très émouvant. Le site est vraiment impressionnant mais j’y ai pris très peu de photos… Je ne suis pas trop à l’aise avec le fait qu’un lieu de recueillement soit devenu si touristique. Beaucoup de gens y prennent des selfies… No comment.

We also went to the 9/11 memorial. I don’t think I would have gone on my own though. Our guide was working in the building next to one of the towers and his story of that day was really moving. The site is impressive but I didn’t take many pictures… I feel a little uncomfortable about the fact that a memorial, basically a cemetery, has become such an attraction for tourists. So many people were taking selfies… No comment.

On Board Sightseeing Tour - environ/about  $90 + tips

Le tour s’est terminé vers 16h30. Juste le temps de rentrer à l’hôtel pour me rafraîchir car il faisait caniculaire ce jour là, manger un morceau et le soir j’ai été voir ma première comédie musicale: Rocky au Winter Garden Theatre. Il s’agit comme le nom l’indique d’un spectacle basé sur le film Rocky avec Sylvester Stallone. Si la musique n’est pas vraiment mémorable (sauf Eye of the Tiger évidemment) le jeu de acteurs, la mise en scène et les décors sont juste époustouflants. Il faut savoir que pendant le deuxième acte la moitié du public du parterre central est amené sur scène pour assister au dernier combat. Une fois ces gens sur scène il font glisser le ring sur les siège et celui-ci c’est retrouvé juste devant moi! Autant dire qe j’avais une superbe vue!

The tour ended around 4:30pm. I just had the time to go back to my hotel to freshen up (it was blistering hot that day!), eat something and then in the evening I saw my first musical: Rocky at the Winter Garden Theatre. Obviously it’s based on the movie with Sylvester Stallone. The music might not be very memorable (unless Eye of the Tiger of course), but the acting, directing and sets are amazing. During the second act half the audience in the stalls are brought on stage to watch the fight. Once there they slide the ring onto those seats so it was right in front of me! I had such a cool view of the whole thing!
