L'opus se classa N°1 au Billboard Hot 100. Il a été réédité en 2001, pour fêter ses 30 ans de carrière et à titre posthume en 2012. La chanson "Bad" était initialement destinée à être enregistrée en duo avec Prince mais ce dernier a décliné l'invitation.
