Les scénaristes irlandais et anglais Eoin Colfer et Andrew Donkin ont étudié la presse pendant plusieurs années et ont recueilli de nombreux témoignages, avant d’imaginer le destin d’Ebo, un jeune Nigérien de 12 ans que le lecteur découvre, aux côtés d’autres candidats au départ, sur une fragile embarcation au milieu de la Méditerranée. Le titre en anglais est beaucoup plus puissant, Illegal et c'est même un hastag #NoOneIsIllegalCette bande dessinée est une fiction inspirée d’un ensemble de faits réels, ce récit mis en image par le dessinateur italien Giovanni Riganoest  est accessible à un jeune public.
