Coup de pouce à Maël !

Comme vous, j’essaie de donner un coup de pouce à mes enfants et petits-enfants. L’un d’eux, Maël Mercier cherche une fois par quinzaine ou par semaine à se procurer de l’argent de poche qu’il souhaite réinvestir dans la musique, car il devient pianiste de jazz, quasi professionnel. Biography Maël Mercier :

It was to the sound of J.S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier” that Maël Mercier was born in Braine-Alleud, Belgium, on August 17, 2004, to a Kabyle mother and a Belgian jazz musician father.

As children, he and his little brother grew up with their saxophonist father as their only parent. They therefore follow him on the roads and are constantly bathed in music.

He remembers nights he spent trying to fall asleep in the touring minibus, straining his ears to listen to concerts outdoors in the south of France.

In his memory also remain the hundreds of performances of his father and grandfather, telling and playing the history of jazz, him and his brother holding the bar in exchange for a packet of crisps and a fresh soda as pay of the evening.

After several introductory music lessons, Maël opted for the piano and left the academy after two years of classical studies. At the age of twelve, he immersed himself in musical humanities at the famous Kunsthumaniora in Brussels. There, he meets his peers and can finally develop his passion for jazz. Maël already obtained his secondary school diploma at the age of sixteen and attends the two Brussels Conservatories. There are classes with a.o. Eric Legnini, Nathalie Loriers and Vincent Bruyninckx.

Currently, Maël is an active member of several groups in which he is already proud of his early professional experiences.

His major influences include Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Wynton Kelly, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau.

C’est au son du “Clavier Bien Tempéré” de J.S. Bach que Maël Mercier voit le jour à Braine-l’Alleud, Belgique, le 17 août 2004, d’une maman kabyle et d’un père belge musicien de jazz.

Enfants, lui et son petit frère grandissent avec comme seul parent leur père saxophoniste. Ils le suivent donc sur les routes et sont baignés constamment dans la musique

Il se rappelle de nuits passées à tenter de s’endormir dans le minibus en tournée, tendant l’oreille pour écouter les concerts en plein air, dans le sud de la France.

Dans sa mémoire restent aussi les centaines de représentations de ses père et grand-père, narrant et jouant l’histoire du jazz, lui et son frère tenant le bar en échange d’un paquet de chips et d’un soda frais comme paie de la soirée.

Après plusieurs cours d’initiation musicale, Maël opte pour le piano et quitte l’académie après deux ans d’études classiques. Il s’immerge alors dès douze ans en humanités musicales à la fameuse Kunsthumaniora de Bruxelles. Là, il y rencontre ses pairs et peut enfin développer sa passion pour le jazz. Maël a déjà obtenu à seize ans son diplôme de secondaire et suit les deux Conservatoires de Bruxelles. Il y a cours avec e.a. Eric Legnini, Nathalie Loriers et Vincent Bruyninckx.

Actuellement, Maël est membre actif de plusieurs groupes dans lesquels il s’enorgueillit déjà de premières expériences professionnelles.

Ses influences majeures comptent Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis,Wynton Kelly, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Keith Jarrett et Brad Mehldau.

Biografie Maël Mercier :

Het is op de klanken van het « Welgetempereerde Klavier » van J.S. Bach dat Maël Mercier uit een Kabyle-moeder en een Belgische jazzmuzikant-vader het levenslicht ziet in Eigenbrakel (Braine-l’Alleud) op 17 augustus 2004.

Samen met zijn jongere broer groeit hij op in een muzikaal eenoudergezin : zijn papa is saxophonist die zijn zonen meeneemt naar zijn optredens en op toernee. Van kindsbeen af krijgen zij de muziek dus ingelepeld !

Hij herinnert zich de nachten die hij doorbracht waarbij hij probeerde in slaap te vallen in de touring-minibus, waarbij hij zijn oren spitste om buiten naar concerten in Zuid-Frankrijk te luisteren.

In zijn herinnering blijven ook de honderden optredens van zijn vader en grootvader, die de geschiedenis van de jazz vertelden en speelden, hem en zijn broer die de bar vasthielden in ruil voor een pakje chips en een verse frisdrank als beloning van de avond.

Na een scholing in muzikale initiatie, kiest Maël voor de piano. Wanneer hij ingeschreven wordt in het muzikale middelbaar onderwijs, verlaat hij de academie (na twee jaar klassieke studie) om volledig op te gaan in de opleiding aan de vermaarde Kunsthumaniora in Brussel. Daar ontmoet hij gelijkgestemden en kan hij eindelijk zijn passie voor jazz ontwikkelen. Maël behaalde op zestienjarige leeftijd al zijn middelbareschooldiploma en studeert aan de twee conservatoria van Brussel. Daar volgt hij lessen, bij o.a., Eric Legnini, Nathalie Loriers en Vincent Bruyninckx.

Momenteel is Maël actief lid van verschillende groepen waarme hij al zijn eerste professionele experimenten ervaart.
