Candi Staton, née Canzetta Staton en 1940, est surtout connue pour son tube Young Hearts Run Free, repris dans la BO de "Studio 54",. Mais je ne l'ai découvert vraiment qu'il y a très peu de temps grâce à The Swwetheart of soul, et oui j'ai fait dans la facilité j'ai acheté une compilation !
L'album commence par un titre magnifique I'm Just a Prisoner (of Your Good Lovin'). Les morceaux Candi Staton a une voix incroyable, à l'instar des divas de l'époque (les années 70) Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone ou encore Billie Holiday. I'd rather be an Old man Sweetheart et Sand by your man sont exceptionnels, et que dire de He called me Baby ou encore Too Hurt to cry, a écouter absolument.
Il manque de cette compilation des titres, ceux de l'album Victim (je l'ai découvert encore plus récemment), House of Love et Victim. Pour la petite histoire, Candi Staton a fait une première partie de Ray Charles lorsqu'elle avait tout juste 20 ans, et son dernier passage en France date de 2005 à l'Elysée Montmartre, elle avait 65 ans.
