Hard to forget The Kinks. I tried and I tried, but, to me, the brilliant "kinkish" Bring 'em in, the first Mando Diao's album, has not been topped by any of their following records. Their fourth and latest record, Never seen the light of day, was quite good though, with an interesting back to the basics of folk. And the next one, Give me fire (release date planned for the 13th of February) might be a very good surprise as well, at least according to what I have listened from it.
What is certain is that after the folk twist, Mando Diao is now more influenced by the Gang of Four touch. The whole thing might sound eventually a little bit too clean (especially if you compare their new production to the raw one of their debut album), but it is not that often that a band tries to reinvent itself with success.

Difficile d'oublier The Kinks. J'ai essayé, j'ai essayé, mais, selon moi, l'excellent "kinkish" Bring 'em in, le premier album de Mando Diao, n'a été égalé par aucun de ses successeurs. Le quatrième et dernier disque du groupe, Never seen the light of day, était toutefois franchement intéressant, avec un retour surprenant aux racines du folk. Le prochain, Give me fire (prévu pour le 13 février prochain) pourrait se révéler une excellente surprise, si je me fie à ce que j'en ai entendu.
Une chose est sûre, Mando Diao joue désormais davantage du rock façon Gang of Four que du folk. L'ensemble reste un poil trop polissé à mon goût (surtout par rapport à la production très brute de leur premier disque), mais avouons que ce n'est pas tous les jours qu'un groupe réussit avec autant de succès à se réinventer.
