Last Wednesday saw the anniversary date of Aaliyah's passing away, sparking off another wave of emotion through the interweb. I personally took time to (re)watch some of the singer's performances on Youtube, and that's how I ran into her beautiful cover version of the Soul classic ballad "Giving Up". The track was 1st recorded by Gladys Knight & The Pips in 1964, but was made famous in 1972 when Donny Hathaway released his own version as a single. Aaliyah recorded "Giving Up" for the soundtrack of an upcoming movie she had been picked to star in, a remake of the 1976 musical movie "Sparkle", which was to be produced by Whitney Houston's company.

Et l'on reparle de la regrettée Aaliyah, ce samedi matin, sur mysoul. Alors que la date anniversaire de sa disparition tragique, le 25 août 2001, a suscité une nouvelle vague d'émotion ce mercredi, je me suis égarée ce jour là sur Youtube, pour visionner quelques performances de celle qui restera l'une des incarnations majeures du son R&B; des années 90. Je suis ainsi tombée sur sa reprise de "Giving Up", un titre enregistré en 1964 par Gladys Knight & The Pips et immortalisé par Donny Hathaway sur un single paru en 1972.
C'est pour les besoins du film Sparkle, remake de la comédie musicale avec Irene Cara sortie en 1976, qu'Aaliyah avait enregistré cette cover. Un projet qui aurait permis à la chanteuse de collaborer avec son idole de toujours Whitney Houston, dont la société devait produire le film.
