Miles Davis – So What

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Julian Adderley, and Jimmy Cobb recorded ‘SO WHAT’ (and the entire album, Kind Of Blue)
in one take and without any rehearsal. Growing up I used to jam on my trumpet to this song, throwing my classical trumpet homework aside. I’ve always wanted to be Miles.

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Julian Adderley, et Jimmy Cobb ont enregistré SO WHAT (ainsi que l’album entier, Kind Of Blue) en une seule prise, sans aucune répétition. En grandissant, j’improvisais avec ma trompette sur ce morceau, en mettant de côté mes méthodes d’apprentissage classiques. J’ai toujours voulu être Miles.

Minor Threat – Minor Threat

My roots. I was in middle school when I got into 80s punk. Pretty sure I had this album on tape. I’d walk to and from school, carrying my walkmen and blasting this song. The lyrics didn’t mean anything to me back then, but they resonate strongly now… « Cause I know we’re all heading for that adult crash / The time is so little, the time belongs to us / Why is everybody in such a fucking rush? » Rewinding was a bitch on that walkmen, but it was always worth it.

Mes racines. J’étais au collège quand je me suis mis à écouter du punk des années 80. J’avais cet album sur cassette. J’allais et revenais de l’école mon walkman à la main avec cette chanson à fond. Les paroles ne signifiaient rien pour moi à l’époque, mais elle frappent fort à présent…« Cause I know we’re all heading for that adult crash / The time is so little, the time belongs to us / Why is everybody in such a fucking rush? » (Parce que je sais qu’on va tous dans le mur, adulte / Le temps est si court, le temps nous appartient / Pourquoi tout le monde est si pressé putain ?) Rembobiner avec ce walkman était vraiment chiant, mais ça valait le coup.

The Beach Boys – That’s Not Me

I could, and usually do listen to The Beach Boys everyday. The harmonies in this song and every song on this album are so unbelievably beautiful and powerful. Pet Sounds always brings me to tears, the music is utterly perfect. Brian Wilson is a genius, duh.

Je pourrais écouter, et écoute généralement, The Beach Boys tous les jours. Les harmonies dans cette chanson, tout comme dans toutes les chansons de cet album, sont incroyablement belles et puissantes. Pet Sounds me met toujours les larmes aux yeux, la musique est tout simplement parfaite. Brian Wilson est un génie, bah oui.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre – If Love Is A Drug

Anton Newcombe is a psycho, but man, psycho’s got mad talent. His fusion of Eastern instruments into Western psychedelic rock is unreal. I can’t even explain how influential BJM is to me. I saw them a few years ago at this small dive bar in Salt Lake City and I gave Anton my demo tape that I’d honestly thrown together a couple days before…I don’t even think the last track was finished. I’d seriously do anything to be in this band.

Anton Newcombe est un psychopathe, mais mec, ce psychopathe a un talent de malade. Sa fusion d’instruments occidentaux et de rock psychédélique est surréaliste. Je ne peux même pas expliquer à quel point BJM m’influence. Je les ai vu il y a quelques années de ça dans ce petit bar à Salt Lake City et j’ai donné une démo à Anton que j’avais enregistrée, vraiment, deux jours avant…Je ne crois même pas que la dernière chanson était terminée. J’aurais fait n’importe quoi pour faire partie de ce groupe.

My Bloody Valentine – I Only Said

I live in this song. The dreamy and sensual faint vocals, the guitar’s bending tremolo, and the ever present thick wall of sound put me wholly outside of myself. Whenever I listen to this song I feel like my eyes are closed and I’m floating, unattached from everything. They are the heart and soul of shoegaze. Seeing them perform this at Coachella (’09) literally took my breath away.

Je vis à l’intérieur de cette chanson. Les faibles voix langoureuses et sensuelles, le trémolo courbé de la guitare, et le mur de son épais  et constant me font sortir de moi-même. A chaque fois que j’écoute cette chanson, c’est comme si mes yeux se fermaient et que je me mettais à flotter, détachée de tout. Ils sont le coeur et l’âme de la musique shoegaze. Les voir jouer à Coachella (2009) m’a littéralement coupé le souffle.
