Du 12 mars au 9 avril, la peintre américaine Camille Rose Garcia présente une nouvelle série de dessins et de peintures à la galerie Michael Kohn (Los Angeles, CA) à l’occasion d’une exposition personnelle intitulée “Snow White and the Black Lagoon”. Reprenant la trame du conte classique des frères Grimm, Blanche Neige et les Sept Nains, l’exposition se veut une allégorie actuelle de notre relation désastreuse avec la nature.
Comme l’écrit Kohn, « se référant au conte de fée allemand, de même qu’au dessin animé de Walt Disney, Garcia tisse une histoire affreusement moderne et dysfonctionnelle, utilisant des archétypes Jungiens, une palette aux couleurs psychédéliques et une combinaison de touches très gestuelles et de méticuleuses lignes calligraphiques. Des châteaux noirs, des sorcières pleines de pétrole et une bande de nains étourdis accompagnent Blanche Neige et son fragile entourage constitué d’animaux de la forêt et de la lagune pendant leur périple à travers grottes, lacs et paysages souillés, cherchant sans fin une issue heureuse. »
Camille Rose Garcia will be opening a new solo exhibition, « Snow White and the Black Lagoon » on March 12, 2011 at the Michael Kohn Gallery (Los Angeles, California). The show plays off of the classic Grimm Brothers’ story, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”, with this series of paintings and drawings creating a modern day allegory for our delusional relationship with nature.
As Kohn Gallery writes, « Referencing the classic German Fairy tale, as well as the animated film by Walt Disney, Garcia weaves a monstrous modern and dysfunctional narrative using cartoony Jungian archetypes, a psychedelic saturated color palette, and an obtuse combination of action-painter brush strokes and carefully controlled, calligraphic line work. Gold leaf and black glitter hang out together on the paintings in an uncomfortable but tolerated relationship. Leaking black castles, oily witches, and a gang of tired and dizzy dwarf miners accompany the Snow White and her fragile entourage of forest and lagoon animals as they traverse through caves, lagoons, and compromised natural landscapes, searching for an elusive happy ending. »
