Hon. Cavaye Re-elected House Speaker
The permanent bureau of the National Assembly for the 2011 legislative year was elected during a plenary sitting on thursday.
Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril yesterday, March 10 described his re-election as the Speaker of Cameroon's National Assembly for the 2011 legislative year as the triumph of democracy. He thanked the Chairman of the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), President Paul Biya for choosing him the party's candidate for the post of House Speaker and his colleagues who renewed trust in him. He was speaking after his re-election to post of the House Speaker, the post he has held since 1992.

The election was through a uninominal ballot. Out of 160 votes cast, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril had 143, while there were 17 void ballot papers. The eldest Member of Parliament, Hon. PC Fonso who had been chairing the provisional bureau since the current March ordinary session started last Monday, presided over the election of the House Speaker. After this, he handed over to the President –elect of the permanent bureau, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril who continued presiding over the election of the other members of the bureau. The leader of the CPDM Parliamentary Group, Hon. Ndongo Essomba proposed Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril the party's candidate. He did the same for the First Vice President of the National Assembly, Hon Hilarion Etong. He was also elected through a uninominal ballot. Out of 160 votes cast, he had 144, while there were 16 void ballot papers.

The other members of the bureau that comprises of five Vice Presidents, four Questors and twelve Secretaries, were elected through a consensus list presented by political parties represented at the National Assembly. The Vice President of the CPDM Parliamentary Group, Hon. Muyali Mary Meboka presented the list. However, Hon. Jean-Jacques Ekindi, the lone parliamentarian of the Progressive Movement (MP) party raised a motion in which he said the list should not be called a consensus one because he was not consulted. This did not perturb the election. In the final analysis, all the 23 bureau members elected in 2010 were re-elected to continue in the 2011 legislative year. Another curiosity of the plenary sitting was that Hon. Ayah Paul Abine who recently resigned from the CPDM was absent. Other MPs absent gave proxies to their party colleagues to vote for them but Hon. Ayah Paul could not give a proxy to anybody.

With the permanent bureau of the National Assembly already in office, serious work is expected to start.
