Sorti en 1932, "White Zombie" de Victor Halperin est probablement le premier film de zombies de l'Histoire du cinéma. Film indépendant à petit budget inspiré d'une pièce de théâtre de Broadway, le film met en scène, sur fond de vaudou haïtien, un couple au prise avec un maléfique maître vaudou interprété par Béla Lugosi.
Si le film ne marque pas encore le passage définitif du cinéma fantastique au cinéma d'horreur, il va lancer un nouveau genre que les grands studios vont s'emparer une dizaine d'années après, avec notamment "Vaudou" ("I Walked with a Zombie", 1943) de Jacques Tourneur et Val Lewton pour la RKO.
