Benjamin Diamond, is a French composer of electronic music with many facets. He is notably the voice and the co-author of the worldwide hit "Music Sounds Better With You" produced by the Stardust group, created in 1998 with his friends Alan Braxe and Thomas Bangalter. If he was probably at the beginning the least exposed member of the Stardust trio, Benjamin Diamond is nevertheless a full member of it. Since then and besides the first two albums which saw him redefining the boundaries of electro pop music with "Strange attitude" released on Sony/Epic 2000 and then "Out of myself" on K7/Diamondtraxx in 2005, he was also the manager of the imprint Diamondtraxx that unfortunately disappeared recently. Today, we have the chance to offer you an exclusive interview with this French producer. It follows the interview of other well-known French producers like Da Fresh, Muttonheads, Rodriguez Jr., Paul Nazca. and three producers he knows very well: Fred Falke, Lifelike et Kris Menace. First, I wanted to thank Benjamin who answered our questions.
"Hello Benjamin,
Honestly, it's a real pleasure to interview you because you are part of these legendary artists of the French electronic scene alongside Laurent Garnier, Fred Falke, Thomas Bangalter, Alan Braxe or Etienne de Crecy.
It's been a while you have not produced a track, if I'm right. Tell us about where you are now on. You think to release something soon?
> Yes, I should release a new album in 2012. Normally, an EP will be released in February on the label Kompakt. I took some time to work on another album at home, record electronic music made with machines.
If you look back to 2010, what can you say about it? I know it was particularly dominated by the end of your label Diamond Traxx Music, which will be the topic of a dedicated question later on. But aside from that, what are the other main things?
> This was indeed a year of reflection for me, I took a step back, and I also closed my label. After taking care of the other for ten years, it is now time to work for me…
2011 was a year of hope, right?
> It's nearly the end of 2011, and it was for me a year when I did other things, meet new people, starting a new life...
After you give us these info about your music news we would like to go back to your musical roots. Could you briefly tell us how did you become a producer?
> I’m doing music since I’m a teenager. I started to play in various bands early on, when I was in high school. After college, I started working on film as assistant director, and I was doing in parallel music in my room. I accumulated a lot of discs and hardware during all these years, and so it became natural, also following the success of Stardust, to create my own imprint...
At the beginning, did your family understand what you did for a living? And now are they proud of what you achieved along the years?
> It is a question a bit too personal, but for short, I always received the support of my family...
In 2001, you released your solo track: "Fit Your Heart", that allowed me to know you, including a remixed version by Demon I think. It is a piece a little mythical to me because every time I play it during parties everyone asked me what is it. Is there a specific story behind this track?
> Not really, it's a track I did after the release of my first album Strange Attitude, initially it was not on the CD. For the anecdote, the main character in the clip is none other than... Kavinsky.
Just before, in 1998 to be exact, there were of course (and I’m sure people always talk about it), the Stardust project. You are the incredible voice alongside Alan Braxe and Thomas Bangalter, giving birth to "Music Sounds Better With You". The clip of Michel Gondry also contributed a lot to your success. How did you three meet to each other, knowing that Thomas was already famous because of his Daft Punk duo? A good band of mates to fully enjoy the music?
> ... Exactly! I met T. Bangalter through Alan Braxe, who, at the time had just released his first EP on the label Roulé. I know Alan since high school, I think we just wanted to do music together and that’s all. By chance, we decided to work on this track... Indeed at the time, Daft had already released "Homework", but we produced the track without thinking too much about all of this, in a naïve way, the fresh side of it comes from it, with no doubt...
Are you nostalgic about Stardust or you are someone who looks to the future?
> The track was the first song I released officially... I'm not really someone nostalgic, I think we make the most of it, it had a lot of advantages... I rather look in front of me, and try to continue this as much as I can do, and the best of possible...
And now, are you still in touch?
> Yes, we are still in contact... I mixed @ Regine’s club in Paris last week with Braxe (in November), and I did it again on December 4 @ the 1979, for the party of Vulture... Thomas returned from L.A., he lived in Paris now, it's easier to meet for sure…
In 2008, you released "Cruise Control", an album different from what you had done before, with a more pop side let's say, with the help of Paul Kendall who had worked with artists like Goldfrapp. As you said yourself a "real kiff", which I particularly appreciated. Will there be a following?
> As we speak before, I want to do something different every time... It may disturb a bit the people who follow me from the beginning, but it’s like that... Right now I'm finishing a new album, directed and performed by myself, old fashion style, at home in my studio, with drum machines, synths, my voice, and some cool ideas ...
As we said a few lines above, 2010 was marked by the end of your label Diamondtraxx that you created 10 years ago. Could you please tell us a bit more about the history of this label, especially marked by the release of your album "Out of Myself" in 2005? It was inevitable to close the imprint? The music world is definitely not the same anymore?
> In fact today, running a label needs a lot of energy and as I told you before, I spent a lot more time to the others over the years, the lesson from all of this, and without rancor: it is impossible to be an artist and the boss of a label too...
The music market has changed in ten years, and the advent of the Internet is pushing us to do things differently. I felt that the way of working on my label was part of that past, that there was a need to review everything from the beginning, this is one reason that prompted me to stop...
More precisely, what is your vision the electronic music scene in France for now, that you have seen evolve over the years?
> I think the French scene, as you said, is extremely active, it's a bit thanks to the Daft Punk notably, they opened the doors to everyone. I like a lot of artists, there are things I like, others not, but I will not go in there...
And besides music, what are your hobbies?
> I love cinema, American literature, contemporary art and modern architecture... I collect modern furniture. I love the design 60 and 70'...

> Precisely to get the new developments of the equipment for the production... A lot of nightclubs lend me the stuff, so I can test them... etc.

> I am a fan of the mainstream track: Maroon 5 and Christina Aguillera “Move like Jagger”.

Benjamin Diamond, est un musicien français de musique électronique aux multiples facettes. Aujourd'hui, nous avons la chance de vous offrir une interview exclusive avec ce producteur français. Elle fait suite à l’interview d’autres producteurs français comme Da Fresh, Muttonheads, Rodriguez Jr., Paul Nazca et trois producteurs qu’il connait bien : Fred Falke, Lifelike et Kris Menace. Honnêtement, c’est un vrai plaisir pour moi de t’interviewer, car tu fais parti de ces artistes mythiques de la scène électronique française aux cotés de Laurent Garnier, Fred Falke, Thomas Bangalter, Alan Braxe ou encore Etienne de Crécy.
Ca fait maintenant un petit moment que tu n’as plus sorti de tracks, si je ne me trompe pas. Raconte-nous un peu où tu en es actuellement. Des choses prévues pour bientôt?
> Je devrais sortir un nouvel album dans l’année 2012. Un EP sortira normalement en Février sur le label Kompakt. J’ai pris un peu de temps pour essayer de refaire un album à la maison, un disque de musiques électroniques fait avec des machines, chez moi.
Si tu repenses à 2010, qu’est ce que tu peux en dire ? Je sais qu’elle fut dominée notamment par la fermeture de ton label Diamond Traxx Music, dont nous reparlerons un peu plus tard. Mais à part cela, qu’en gardes tu ?
> C’est effectivement une année de réflexion pour moi, j’ai pris un peu de recul, et j’ai aussi fermé mon label. Après m’être occupé des autres pendant dix ans, je prends le temps de travailler pour moi maintenant…
2011 fut une année d’espoir, nan ?
> C’est bientôt la fin 2011, et ce fut pour moi une année où j’ai fait d’autres choses, rencontrer de nouvelles personnes, le démarrage d’une nouvelle vie quoi…
Après nous avoir donné ces infos sur ton actualité musicale nous aimerions en revenir à tes origines. Pourrais-tu en quelques mots nous dire comment tu es devenu DJ et producteur ?
> Je fais du son depuis que je suis ado, j’ai commencé par faire des groupes très tôt, lorsque j’étais au lycée. Après la fac, j’ai commencé à bosser dans le cinéma en tant qu’assistant réalisateur, et je faisais en parallèle de la musique dans ma chambre. J’ai accumulé pas mal de disques et de matériels pendant toutes ces années là, et c’est tout naturellement que j’en suis venu après le succès de Stardust, par monter mon label...
Au début, est-ce que ta famille a compris ce que tu voulais faire dans la vie? Et maintenant sont-ils fiers de ce que tu as réalisé au fil des années?
> Ca, c’est une question un peu perso, mais pour faire court, j’ai toujours reçu le soutien de mes proches…
En 2001, tu sors le titre avec lequel je t’ai découvert : « Fit your heart », notamment remixé par Demon je crois. C’est un morceau un peu mythique pour moi car à chaque fois que je le joue en soirée on me demande toujours ce que c’est. Y a-t-il une histoire spécifique derrière ce titre ou pas ?
> Non pas vraiment, c’est un titre que j’ai fait après la sortie de mon premier album Strange Attitude, au départ, il ne figurait pas sur le disque. Pour la petite anecdote, le personnage principal du clip n’est autre que Kavinsky…
Juste avant, en 1998 pour être exact, il y a eu bien évidemment et on doit souvent te le ressasser, le projet Stardust dont tu étais la voix aux côtés d’Alan Braxe et Thomas Bangalter pour « Music Sounds Better With You ». Le clip de Michel Gondry avait d’ailleurs pas mal contribué à votre succès. Comment étiez vous entré en contact, sachant que Thomas était déjà un peu connu ? Une bonne bande de pote en somme pour un kiff total ?
> Exactement…! J’ai rencontré T. Bangalter par le biais d’Alan Braxe, qui à l’époque venait juste de sortir son premier maxi sur le label Roulé. Je connais Braxe depuis le lycée, je pense qu’on avait envie de faire du son ensemble depuis longtemps, et c’est vraiment par hasard, qu’on a décide de faire ce titre…
Effectivement à l’époque, les Dafts avaient déjà sorti « Homework », mais on a fait ce titre sans trop penser à tout ça, de manière un peu naïve, le coté frais de ce titre vient de la je pense…
Stardust, ça te laisse nostalgique ou tu es plutôt quelqu’un qui regarde vers le futur?
> Ce titre est le premier morceau que j’ai sorti de manière officielle… Je ne suis pas vraiment quelqu’un de nostalgique, je crois qu’on en a bien profité… Je regarde plutôt devant moi, et j’essaye de continuer ce que je sais faire, et le mieux possible…
Et aujourd’hui vous êtes encore en contact ?
> Oui on est toujours en contact… J’ai mixé à Paris au Régine avec Braxe la semaine dernière (en Novembre), et on remet ça le 4 Décembre au 1979 pour une soirée Vulture… Thomas est rentré de L.A., il vit à Paris maintenant, c’est plus facile pour se voir…

Comme tu le dis toi-même un « vrai kiff », qu’on avait particulièrement apprécié. Penses-tu lui donner une suite ou pas ?
> Comme je te l’ai dit un peu plus haut, j’ai envie de faire quelque chose de différent à chaque fois… C’est peut être cela qui déroute un peu les gens qui me suivent depuis le début, mais c’est comme ça… En ce moment je suis en train de finir un disque produit , réalisé et interprété par moi même, un peu à l’ancienne, chez moi, dans mon studio, avec des boites à rythmes, des synthés, ma voix, et quelques idées cool…
Comme on l’évoquait quelques lignes plus haut, 2010 fut marqué par la fermeture de ton label Diamondtraxx, que tu avais créé 10 ans auparavant. Raconte-nous un peu l’histoire de ce label, notamment marqué par la sortie de ton album « Out of myself » en 2005. C’était inévitable cette fermeture ? Le monde de la musique a bel et bien changé ?
> Effectivement aujourd’hui, faire tourner un label demande beaucoup d'énergie et comme je te l’ai dit un peu plus haut, je me suis beaucoup consacré aux autres pendant toutes ces années, la leçon qu’on peut tirer de tout cela, et sans aucune rancœur, c’est qu’il est impossible d’être artiste, et à la fois d’être le boss d’un label…
Le marché du disque a beaucoup changé en dix ans, et l’avènement d’internet nous pousse aujourd’hui à faire les choses autrement. J’ai eu le sentiment que la manière de travailler sur mon label faisait parti de ce passé, qu’il fallait revoir tout depuis le début, c’est une des raisons qui m’a pousser à arrêter…
Quelle est ta vision actuelle justement de la scène de musique électronique en France, toi qui l’a vu évoluer au fil des années?
> Je trouve que la scène Française comme tu dis est extrêmement active, c’est un peu grâce au Daft d’ailleurs, ils ont ouvert la porte à tout le monde. J’apprécie pas mal d’artistes, il y a des choses que j’aime, d’autres pas, mais je ne vais pas rentrer la dedans…
Et à part la musique, quels sont tes hobbies?
> J’adore le cinéma, la littérature américaine, l’art contemporain et l’architecture moderne… Je collectionne le mobilier moderne, j’adore le design 60 et 70’…
