Preamble : it took some time but I eventually got the second Johnossi album named All they ever wanted. I have waited for it so long that it did need a review.
There are different ways to make a second record : you can just do the same routine than your first one (The Strokes), make a work of genius (Nirvana) or be disappointing (Arcade Fire). Johnossi decided to get dirtier, harder and louder. I mean LOUDER. While their first eponymous album was mostly blues, this one definitely rocks. You might have heard their single Party with my pain if you read my previous post. A grunge anthem which announced a heavier direction, but is nothing compare to Zeppelin, the noisiest song of the record, a true musical tornado. Best song ? Perhaps 18 Karat gold, the threatening opening song, which is about to explode any time but never really blows off.
For sure, there is the rage. The powerful and sweet voice of John (kind of reminds me the Kurt Cobain's one). The unstoppable energy of Ossi behind his drums. The great work of the proudcer Jari Haapalainen (one of the Bear Quartet's members). Musicaly it remains superior to all those bands with black tee shirt and dark attitude, so let's put it that way : All they ever wanted is one of the very best Swedish record made in 2008. A must have.

Préambule : ça m'a pris du temps, mais j'ai finalement reçu All they ever wanted, le deuxième album de Johnossi. Je l'ai tellement attendu qu'il méritait bien une critique.
Il existe plusieurs façons de faire un deuxième disque : refaire la même chose que le premier (The Strokes), faire un album génial (Nirvana) ou être décevant (Arcade Fire). Johnossi a décidé de devenir plus crade, plus dur, plus fort. Je veux dire, plus FORT. Alors que leur premier album éponyme était plutôt blues, celui-ci est franchement rock. Vous avez peut-être entendu leur single Party with my pain si vous avez lu mon billet précédent. Un hymne grunge qui annonçait une direction plus acérée, mais rien à voir avec Zeppelin, le morceau le plus bruyant du disque, une vraie tornade musicale. La meilleure chanson ? Peut-être 18 Karat gold, le titre d'ouverture, qui semble être sur le point de rompre à tout moment sans jamais véritablement exploser.
Il y a la rage. La puissante et douce voix de John (elle me rappelle celle de Kurt Cobain). L'énergie inarrêtable d'Ossi derrière ses batteries. L'excellent travail du producteur Jari Haapalainen (l'un des membres du Bear Quartet). Musicalement, l'ensemble reste supérieur à tous ces groupes à tee-shirt noir, soyons donc clairs : All they ever wanted est l'un des meilleurs disques suédois sorti en 2008. Indispensable.
