In the eighties, I was a huge Amstrad fan. I did love those 8 bits video games. 256 colors. Cheap sounds. But so much ingeniousness. Nowadays, video games lost their identity : they copy movies (which themselves copy video games). Both medias go to the same direction while, to me, they should evolve in two separate ways.
Have you played Doom? A three dimensional shoot them up. Huge success. Well, I prefer Wolfenstein 3D, its "grandpa', released before. It was a shareware (i.e. you do not pay anything to get it but can give money to the authors afterwards) and has actually never been adapted on Amstrad.
The Paper Merchants are a brand new unknown unsigned band. I only heard the three songs they put on MySpace. All of them sound promising. Interpol? The Cure? Broder Daniel? Let's say they make pop songs with dark atmospheres. Just like I Can't Walk With You Into Doom. Right now, their songs have a quite "low-fi" recording quality. Translation : they might have been recorded in a bathroom. Kind of "8-bits spirit", then. I don't know if those paper merchants are gonna change this, but that does not matter much since I truly believe they can become even better in the next future. And, you know, they're are already good.

Dans les années 1980, j'étais un énorme fan des jeux Amstrad. J'adorais ces jeux vidéos 8-bits. 256 couleurs. Plus de bips que de musique. Mais énormément d'ingéniosité. Aujourd'hui, les jeux vidéos copient les films (qui eux-mêmes se calquent sur les jeux vidéos). Ils devraient, selon moi, creuser leur propre univers.
Vous avez déjà joué à Doom? Un "shoot them up" en trois dimensions. Enorme succès. Je lui préfère pourtant son prédécesseur Wolfenstein 3D. Il s'agissait d'un shareware (c'est-à-dire que vous le commandez gratuitement et rémunérez ensuite ses auteurs si vous le voulez). Précision : il n'est jamais sorti sur Amstrad.
The Paper Merchants forment un jeune groupe inconnu et ne sont signés sur aucun label. Je n'ai pu écouter que leurs trois chansons sur MySpace. Chacune d'elles promet. Interpol ? The Cure? Broder Daniel? Disons qu'ils composent de la pop plutôt sombre. Comme ce I Can't Walk With You Into Doom, par exemple. Actuellement, leurs morceaux sonnent très "low-fi". Traduction : ils ont dû être enregistrés dans une salle de bain. Esprit 8-bits, en quelque sorte. Je ne sais pas si cela changera. Peu importe, ces gars-là risquent bien de nous pondre d'autres chansons dignes d'intérêt très bientôt.
