Comment avec cette fille devant moi,
Fixer mon attention
Sur la politique espagnole
Ou russe ou bien romaine ?
Pourtant, voici un voyageur qui sait
De quoi il parle,
Et voilà un politicien
Qui a lu et réfléchi,
Et peut-être ce qu’ils disent est-il vrai
De la guerre et des risques de guerre,
Mais ô si j’étais jeune encore
Et la serrais dans mes bras !

How can I, that girl standing there,
My attention fix
On Roman or on Russian
Or on Spanish politics?
Yet here’s a travelled man that knows
What he talks about,
And there’s a politician
That has read and thought,
And maybe what they say is true
Of war and war’s alarms,
But O that I were young again
And held her in my arms!
