Les mots y reposent dans l’écrin de leur sens de jadis.
Mais ils nous sont étrangers. Que disent ces lèvres ?
Elles parlent d’autres circonstances et d’autres faits.
Pendant que tu écoutes leur discours
elles articulent des choses sans cesse modifiées,
des bribes d’une langue encore plus lointaine
dans un autre écrin
de la montagne aux sept écrins
des milliers d’années avant Babylone.

Längs ekots stigar

Längs ekots stigar tillbaka.
Där vilar orden i sina gamla betydelsers skrin.
Men ack så främmande. Vad är det de säger, dessa läppar.
Om andra sammanhang och tillstånd talar de.
Medan du lyssnar till deras tal
formar de något som förändrats också av dem
stavar på ett språk än längre borta
i ännu ett av skrinen
i de sju skrinens berg
tusen och tusen år före Babylon.

Along the paths of echo

Along the paths of echo backwards.
There the words lie in the chest of their old meanings.
But, sad, so foreign. What is it they are saying, those lips.
They speak of different connections and conditions.
As you listen to them speaking
they form a thing that is also changed by them
spell in a language even farther removed
in still another of the chests
inside the mount of the seven chests
thousands and thousands of years before Babylon.
